Yeah, their later stuff especially has a strong melodic component. But I consider them pretty far removed from the trendy bands that typically come to mind when one says "pop punk" nowadays.

The openers for the Bad Religion show are OFF! and Riverboat Gamblers.

Anyone heard of those bands?

OFF! is "medio-core"

that album wasn't really poppy. the band perhaps, but I don't think the album counts

They became a pop punk band. How Can Hell Be Any Worse? was their first album. They didn't become poppy until later, and I think it was a slow degeneration.

That's fair, I'm more focusing on their importance to the development of pop-punk than how that album sounds.

No, bands. I assumed 'recs' was short for recommendations. If you need album names I can try to whip up a list.

I feel like a punk heretic for not discovering Descendents until recently. I'm fucking addicted. If Milo Goes to College came out 10 years later, they'd be a household name.

You can thank the Descendants for biggest pop punk bands. Op Ivy and the Descendants inspired Green Day and Blink-182.

Absolutely. Operation Ivy is another one of those bands I didn't appreciate for a long time, even though I absolutely loved Rancid. My friend and I would fight over which one was better

Green Day will always hold a special place in my heart. Being born in 1995, Dookie had recently come out and my parents always had it on. I literally grew up with those bastards :P

I think Op Ivy is much better. Rancid had one good album out of a bunch, while Op Ivy only had one album and I'd say it's one of the top ten punk albums I've heard. They also blended ska with punk better, where Rancid has ska songs and punk songs.

I think that Let's Go is fantastic, and I was never a huge fan of And Out Come the Wolves..., which is usually the album that comes to mind when people think of Rancid. It had songs like Ruby Soho and Time Bomb sure, but Let's Go is enjoyable from beginning to end. Idk, probably biased because it was another one of those CD's I had as a kid.

Operation Ivy is fucking amazing though. They were there, they put out Energy, and then moved on. It takes some special fuckin' talent to put out 27 songs (if we're going by the 1991 re-release) and not one of them makes me want to skip.

And Out Come The Wolves... was my first experience with Rancid, and I enjoyed most of it. A few songs were annoying. None of their other stuff really sounded fun to me.

If you liked Energy and ska in general, and don't mind crust punk, you should check out No Gods/No Managers by Choking Victim. Arguably my favorite punk album.

Good news is that I don't hate the vocalist so far, which is usually a huge deterrent in my enjoyment of many otherwise decent bands. :P

This is Stza's second band. Though, this is the first successful band. I've never heard anything by No Commercial Value. LoC is pretty awesome, SFH isn't.

Yeah, the only thing I really managed to enjoy from SFH is the cover of Ana Ng, and really because I generally enjoy most TMBG covers.

So I finished the album, overall I enjoyed it! Crack Rock Steady was really the only song on it that made me go "yeah, I definitely see where he got an Energy vibe from this", though. A lot of varied style, it went from ska to screamo metal pretty fast though. Songs like the Fuck America (at least the beginning of it), Praise the Sinners, and Living The Laws grated on me because I really don't like screamy/growly shit. Other than that, pretty solid stuff, thanks for recommending it :)

I uploaded the setlist from the Bad Religion show last night

Lots of stuff from Suffer, which was awesome. Also, singing along to classics like Infected, American Jesus, etc. was great. Crowd energy was incredible.

Lots of stuff from Suffer, which was awesome. Also, singing along to classics like Infected, American Jesus, etc. was great. Crowd energy was incredible.

Wouldn't expect anything less from a Bad Religion show. I really wish I had the time and money to go to concerts these days :(

Also, Hey TROTRO :P
