Your complaint seems to be with 80s hardcore, not with Minor Threat. Black Flag and Dead Kennedys were west coast punk bands that influenced hardcore; Minor Threat were hardcore.
Dead Kennedys and Black Flag lack the focus and conciseness that seems to define hardcore punk.
If you listen to Bad Brains or DC Youth Brigade or State of Alert (featuring Henry Rollins before he was Henry Rollins) compared to DKs or Black Flag the difference should stand out. A lot of the 'Decline of Western Civilization' bands were called hardcore punk, but prior to 1980 that just meant 'dedicated to punk rock and the DIY culture', the hardcore punk sound hadn't emerged fully yet. The East Coast bands that formed around 1980 defined the sound.

Pretty much every HC band after them emulated that sound which makes them sound bland, unimaginative, etc. even though they were among the first.

I have a pretty huge love for punk music and the -core genres it spawned
My favorite punk band is the crust punk outfit Fall of Efrafa.
Even though my favorite punk outfit is crust punk, it's hard to pinpoint a specific sub genre I like most
I mean almost every subgenre has something good to it, something that makes the subgenre more interesting and opens the way for more artists in that subgenre to be discovered. I like crust a lot and bands like Amebix and From Ashes Rise resonate with me still.
And the cores (mostly early-mid 90's metalcore and post-hardcore) are also very good. They really aren't considered punk or metal, but I feel like they'd make more sense in this thread as they normally borrow more from punk. Bands like Converge, Rorschach, Quicksand and Chavez are a few of my favorite -core bands

I think they deserve a chance, I love them at least, but Black Flag and T.S.O.L both awesome bands up there in my top favs, just wish T,S,O,L didn't keep switching genre's around so much they started to get back to their roots in early 2000s but their latest album didn't care much for
