Punk Rock Discussion Thread

Postby The New Sea Territory » Sun Sep 07, 2014 2:24 pm

Oi!

Seeing we have a Metal Thread, but no thread for an equally awesome genre, I've decided to start a Punk Rock Thread. Whether you like the original Ramones, 90s pop-punk bands or the most underground of 80s hardcore, this is the place for you.

General Rule: If you're just here to bash the genre, please leave. No Flaming, Spamming or Trolling.

I'll start off. My favorite bands:

Bad Religion (older albums)
Rancid
Screeching Weasel
Suicidal Tendencies (Hardcore, their thrash isn't good)
Leftover Crack
Choking Victim
Operation Ivy
Wingnut Dishawsher's Union
Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains
Man is the Bastard
Capitalist Casualties
Crossed Out
Rise Against (older albums)
Minor Threat
Subhumans
Black Flag
Dead Kennedys
Lard
Dirty Rotten Imbiciles (DRI)
Infest
The Descendants
Agnostic Front
Reagan Youth
The Germs
Beastie Boys
The Exploited
Dropkick Murphys
Flogging Molly
Anti-Flag (Older albums)
Sex Pistols
Napalm Death (if you consider grindcore to be punk)
Bad Brains
Fugazi
Sublime
Negative Approach
Neanderthal
No Comment
Crossed Out
Social Distortion
NOFX
Youth Brigade
Al-Thawra
Days 'N Daze
The Dumpers
Crass
Spazz
Charles Bronson
Aus-Rotten
Discharge
Orchid
Propagandhi
Ground
Embrace
Behind Enemy Lines
Catch 22
Streetlight Manifesto
Suicide Machines
Black Kronstadt
Disclose
Weekend Nachos
Magrudergrind
Discordance Axis
Gridlink

...and that's me. In general, I like most kinds of punk. I refrain from Nazi Punk or hate filled nonsense, but besides that, anything else is cool. My favorite genres are hardcore, thrashcore and powerviolence. Now you've heard me ramble on long enough...discuss!

...what about Rancid?

Ska Punk is iffy. It has to be done very well to be good. Choking Victim/Leftover Crack are a really awesome mix of ska, hardcore, crust, anarcho-punk, thrash and black metal.

My favorite punk band is Bad Religion. Suffer is my favorite punk rock album and Stranger Than Fiction was the first album to get me into punk.

I also like the Sex Pistols, Amebix, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, Vision of Disorder, Flipper, and Bad Brains.

Other than these bands, I haven't delved into Punk as much as I would like. Would appreciate any recommendations.

Stranger than Fiction is one of Bad Religion's best.

Um...I've been listening to a lot of Leftover Crack and Choking Victim. DRI is pretty awesome, and if you like really heavy stuff, Capitalist Casualties.

Obviously, the hardcore classics above. And Ramones. Duh.

However, I see Screeching Weasel (one of my absolute favourites), but not The Queers! Very similar bands, and apparently good buds as well. Interesting balance of angry obscene stuff and poppy boy/girl songs. "Love Songs for the Retarded" and "Beat Off" are classic albums.

Circle Jerks, despite their issues with Black Flag, are pretty decent in my book as well. Also, The Misfits, despite Only and Danzig smearing feces on their legacy over petty squabbles, were also an iconic band. NOFX, once again, produces some decent music, despite their increasing grandeur.

Propagandhi is an excellent, thoughtful Canadian punk band and I like them a great deal, but I've really been into the Dayglo Abortions lately, which are really the opposite extreme, an intentionally offensive but very fun band. Hanson Brothers are also good Canadian punk, even though they're Ramones clones.

GWAR, Angry Samoans, Dead Milkmen and Dwarves. As you can probably tell, political correctness is not really a priority in my punk. I love bands that are not afraid to be political, and have some issues with Legs McNeill's original priorities, but I also don't care for bands that take themselves too seriously. I am an extremely progressive person, but sometimes you have to let loose and be playfully obnoxious. On that note, while I enjoy a few of GG Allin's songs, I think he was an objectionable character and find his personal philosophy repugnant.

On a political front, I have a huge thing for Riot Grrl. Bikini Kill is one of my favourite bands of all time, while I also listen to a lot of Bratmobile, The Youngins, Fifth Column, Red Aunts, Runaways and The Donnas (if they count)... the list is long. I initially thought Pussy Riot was devoid of musical talent, but in all fairness, they are usually being attacked. Some of their recorded material is pretty good.

Limp Wrist is also an excellent, fairly political, if not especially prolific, band. Randy is also quite political, perhaps not as intellectually dense as Propagandhi, but they have their moments. "Proletarian Hop" is their best, in my opinion.

Also, Agent Orange... always had a soft spot for surfpunk.

(Of course I can't list them all, but I also enjoy Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Casualties, Vandals, Lillingtons, Dropkicks, Flogging Molly, Gore Gore Girls (the Ben Weasel one, not the newer one with absolutely no connection), Riverdales, Transplants, Streetlight Manifesto, Choking Victim, Hog, Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground, Johnny Thunders, Dead Boys, Sex Pistols (despite the bollocks), Rancid, Transplants, Talking Heads, Lagwagon, Neos, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes... I'll stop now.)

But if we include grindcore, which I do, the list would really blow up. Suffice it to say Pig Destroyer's disc of punk covers is golden. I'll cut myself off there.

Local punk band Semen in Garfunkel is pretty rad as well, with tracks such as "Born on a Bender" and "BBQ and Destroy."

And just for fun, nerdpunk band Smoked Solid Dairy has recently come to my attention. For all you lovers of Japanese weirdness and a grown man dressed as an anime princess.

Limp Wrist has members of Kill The Man Who Questions, who are (yet another) political anarchist band from PA. Them and His Hero Is Gone are my two favourite PA bands, but Aus Rotten are up there too.
Propagandhi are amazing.

Also, Orchid are amazing. Super intense.

Try not bathing for a week and sleeping in an abandoned building. This should make you significantly more punk rock. 8)

What do you mean when you say the least punk person ever? As in aesthetically or intellectually?

I've always considered it more of an attitudinal thing, a state of mind.

A lot of kids these days don't understand that Punk is an ideology that goes beyond the studded jean jackets and back patches.

Also, Third-Wave Ska is nearly as bad as Nickelback.

We seem to have hit a lull. It also appears that we're all into Propagandhi.

I personally enjoyed their earlier work the most. How To Clean Everything was great, despite the fact that Chris Hannah hates it now. I think Less Talk. More Rock is my favourite album, but Potemkin City Limits and Today's Empires are great too. With that being said, I do not like the direction they are going in currently. Supporting Caste and Failed States, I think, stray from what I liked about their more sophomoric efforts, but the roots of that style can be seen in their mid career albums. They seem to have lost some of their edge and combativeness, in my opinion. Still strong subject matter, but a more technical, less punchy delivery. I liked their youthful impotent rage, I guess. Middle Finger Response sums it up well.

On another note, a version I have of The Only Good Fascist Is a Dead Fascist features someone calling in to complain about Hannah's descent into "politically correct authoritarianism," specifically relating to an incident where he beat an audience member with a microphone stand for Seig Heiling at one of his shows. There obviously was, and in some scenes, may still be, a Nazi punk problem (my God, after reading Henry Rollins' 'Get In the Van'... so many skinheads...) but is this an appropriate response? I know of many instances wherein a band member retaliated against audience members (Henry again, obviously, and the notorious Ben Weasel incident, for example) but this individual, however much a backpfeifengesischt, did not actually commit any violence (to my knowledge).

While I don't think any less of Hannah for it, is this evidence of a wider backlash against the skinhead presence in punk scenes? Or of political correctness gone awry? While I enjoy Propagandhi's intersectional, varied and educated views on a multiplicity of subjects, I have a strange relationship with political correctness wherein I know the proper terms and hold progressive, informed views but still (among those who know myself and my views) am playfully obnoxious and offensive. I myself am conflicted on the issue, but I certainly don't begrudge the man.

Even this, and his concerted efforts, though, were not enough to win him the infamy of Worst Canadian :p http://www.punknews.org/article/24853/propagandhis-chris-hannah-places-second-in-worst-canadian-poll

You're welcome. They're the band that got me into emotional hardcore/emo about 14 years ago and I've never looked back since. I can post some more 'skramz'-ish stuff if you'd like.

skramz = what real "screamo" started to call itself when MTV started calling any poppy metalcore band with songs about girls "screamo".
