Invite him to your court; visiting New England tends to do that type of thing to people.

Unfortunately, he is unwilling to come to my court. Presumably it's something to do with the fact that he's planning to usurp my throne.

Wait, you have tanistry? I seem to have started out with Open, which I find quite useful, as I can more or less freely choose heirs.

PDM has a royal wedding event thing where you can either choose to marry them to one of your own nobility or another country's nobility which gives you a 50 relationship bonus to that country. Yeah every soldier in my army was outnumbered 5 to one... I think I did the right thing just letting it go, maybe some day the British will reclaim India but it's not going to be this day.
