so my reactionaryism has gone to shit, the Kaiser has been hung in front of 802,000 rebellious men, women and children while my army was busy making the Baltic bleed with Swedish blood. They put in a new, more liberal Kaiser in his place but he mucked everything up. So there was another revolution that hung the Phony Kaiser and put in a THIRD, different, more conservative Kaiser while also forming a Upper House will free elections and abolishing slavery while also forcing him to release all his puppets in SA and Europe except Jan Mayen.

I created the Kingdom of New England, then prepared an invasion of Hudsonia for their two holy sites. I got over 10,000 troops from the preparations, which was easily enough to destroy them. I then conquered the one remaining holy site in Manhattan and reformed the Occultist faith. I think I'm doing pretty well.

Speaking of AtE, I downloaded it the other day to give it a try and decided to start up as the OPM count of Long Island (who I ruler designed to be a Rust Cultist). The Republic of New York kept getting involved in wars that would sap their manpower so I kept stealing territory from them without much effort. Eventually once I had taken all their territory and some more land from other OPM's in the area I was able to create a custom kingdom, which was a nice goal I had been shooting for. I also controlled most of the territory needed to create the Kingdom of Gotham so after another decade or so of small conquests I was able to create my second kingdom title.

Then I took a look at the ledger to see how strong everyone around me was and to my surprise I had the second largest army in the world. I'm guessing it's because most of my territory while small was heavily built up. New England on the other hand only had some 3500 troops, so I declared a subjugation war on them and took all of their territory and the Kingdom of New England title. At this point I just had to wait another few years for my prestige to build up, and once I passed 8000 I created the Empire of Steel (cuz Rust Cult ftw).

My emperor also had a firearm and a typewriter and was an accomplished Tech Scavenger, life was good. Sadly he died 3 years after the empire was founded, and his daughter took over but she has good traits, a couple good perks and inherited the mighty gun and typewriter.

Now the game crashes completely.

I think I'll try After the End Version 0.3 instead, see if that's the problem.

It turns out I was extracting the files into a new folder called "After_the_End" or some such rather than the mod folder directly, and this obviously broke the whole system down.

It took all my three years of programming experience and two nights of experimentation to figure that out.

Actually, WinRAR can extract .zip files, as I have done so multiple times. Have you got WinRAR installed? If no, go and get it. If you have, then maybe attempt to "open with" and then WinRAR.

Dammit. I'm playing as a proto-New England about to form once I have the cash to do so. I'll still need a while to reform but am relatively close to becoming feudal.(I think I built the last required building and my tribal organization can be raised to medium or high in that year)

For me, it's the feeling of success. The feeling I get after the Hanseatic League clashes with the hated French and drives them out of rightful German land, then sets up a weak, incompetent republic in the country's eastern provinces to keep the French under control. The feeling when the French Revolution happens fueled by the rage against its royal family and the hatred against Germany, master of continental Europe.

The feeling of Napoleonic formations marching against the armies marching against some fifty thousand of their own brothers under Republican slavery, forced to exhaust themselves in battle against their kin only to be smashed apart by Germanic-Hanseatic armies from the German mainland and Scandinavia.

The feeling of Paris being occupied and the hideously overpowered French countryside burning as my Armeegruppen march through it.

Within a month, the Men in Black had already taken Langley, which is - as with anything involving J. Edgar Hoover - deeply troubling.
