Wait, could it be that your mod folder has an additional folder within in it that you should take something out of? I don't have the AtE mod so I couldn't check..... but if you have notepad++ I'd open the .mod and check if the path is the same as the mod's folder.

The folder in the mods folder is WTWSMS-v.0.9.4, which contains all of the mods stuff. It does have one inside of it called WTWSMS, as well as several portrait MOD files, which makes me wonder if I have to unpack everything from there.

You do have to. At least, that's my understanding.
Or maybe not everything, just the WTWSMS folder as well as those portrait .mod files you want/need.

I'm an semi-expert on these DLC's. This list is my personal opinion.

The DLC's you definitifely need are placed there in descending order of ''yes-buy-it!''-grades:

10 (BUY BUY): Ways of Life
It adds nice portraits to your characters and makes them look more realistic - or even more realistic if you have all Portrait Packs.
Also, you get hundreds of new events which are awesome, and you can seduce your sister, your parents, or you can choose to become a filthy rich man, or to murder your liege with profession...

9: The Old Gods.
Start date gets back to 867. You can play as pagans (which are fun as hell) and Zoroastrians, which can marry between close kins. Childs born as a result of a marriage between these close kins have a smaller chance on the 'Inbred' trait, which is a very, very bad trait. However, they have a higher chance to get the 'Lunatic' trait, which gives you super funny events.

And you can sacrifice popes, other religious leaders up to even your own brother if he's in prison. Also, you can raid and loot other countries.

8: Legacy of Rome
You can make standing armies, called retinues. You are able to 'Mend the Great Schism' if you are the Orthodox emperor of the Byzantine Empire.
And there are flavor events that focus on Orthodoxy and the Byzantine Empire.
Also, you can restore the Roman Empire. How? Who knows...? It's a mystery!

7: Charlemagne
The start date gets even further back, to 769. You are in the deep, very deep and dark ages now. Welcome to the real middle ages, in where we kill each other to be able to eat, where looting is an everyday event...
And you can create a custom kingdom or empire, which makes the game far more realistic, since that did happen often in reality.
You also now are able to appoint viceroys if you are a king/emperor, which are vassals - except, the difference is, that on their death, their title is not inherited by their children but is brought back to the liege.

6: The Republic
You are able to play a republic now, and can be a patrician. If you are a Doge (the leader of a Republic) and didn't win the elections? No problems! You can continue playing without having to worry about losing your holding. Also, you can embargo other republics, gain extremely much money and use Capitalism™ as your weapon of choice...

5: Sword of Islam
You are able to play as a muslim now. Alhamdillulah! And Salaam-al-keilum!
There are a few more events, and you get some other skins available for your ruler. You can ask for a Jihad and battle for your islamic country.
Decadence is a thing rocking now, and watch out if you have too few wifes or are holding all your newly conquered titles for yourself; your decadence may go up too much and you may fund yourselves in a war to lower your ''decadency''.
Also, watch out for the Abbasids. They might get you soon...

4: Rajas of India

Ah, Hindustan! You can seemingly play Indians now, and you can convert to the culture or religion of your capital, which is useful during a war if there is a crusade against you. And there is a massive map expansion --- there are more than 300 new provinces added.
Look out for the war elephants, they're there and in massive numbers, hidden in the jungle to attack ye olde bastard.

3: Ruler Designer/CK2 to EU4 converter (NOT AN EXPANSION - only a tool, but very useful!)
Do you hate your Indulgent Wastrel or Naive Appeaser ruler? Dislike his Inbred traits and want to make him a Genius, or want to make him even worse, such as an Lunatic? Want to make your own family and family shield with blackjack and hookers? Then the Ruler Designer is something you will like.

The CK2 to EU4 converter is a tool that lets your game of CK2, if completed, be transferred, - or as we say, converted - to EU4, in where it will be displayed as a playable mod.
Quite handy if you want to add another 380 years of gameplay.

2: Sons of Abraham
You can play as Jews now, and you can lend money from Jewish bankers as a Christian, Muslim or pagan. And you can go onto a pilgrimage, make your children monks or nuns if they're not obedient or if you don't want them to inherit your titles. Useful if you have the Gavelkind succession type.
There are holy orders and they can fight for you for free, but you'll have to pay piety for them initially.

1 (ONLY BUY AS LAST RESORT): Sunset Invasion
An ahistorical DLC based on the idea of the Aztecs invading Europe. They come along with a filthy disease that may be called worse than themselves; the Aztec disease. And oh, Goodness, they do sacrifice a lot of humans for glory! They do not like kind people.

Also, if you don't have much money... I recommend using Steam during the sales. You will know when the sales are there because there are -50% and -70% numbers listed, and maybe there are even bigger sales. The biggest sale I've ever seen on Steam was -95% off.

Pfff, LoR is clearly number 1 'cause retinues, followed by ToG, then comes the Ruler Designer because that is really fun, Ways of Life, EU4 Converter (assuming you have and enjoy EU4), followed by SoA, and then the Republic-SoI-RoI in whatever order you like.
I can't rate where exactly Charlemagne is as never actually played it, the same also applies for SI but I also don't intend to buy SI (at least within foreseeable time).

But I do have to fully agree on what you said regarding the steam sales.

And a last note, the Holy Orders were not added with SoA, they did in fact exist before and they did fight you for free after the piety payment (And yes I do speak from personal experience in this case). What they did add is that at least the catholic orders may request permission to build castles and that males sent to take vows might end up serving in them, unless I am mistaken.

So we can agree that:

• LoR is high on the list >8)
• SI is the 1 on the list (lowest)
• EDIT: oh, I was drunk and added another •

I've begun an Ironman game as Sviatopolk Rurikid, count of some shitty province called Zyaragoe (or somesuch) on the border of Novgorod and Finland, vassal of his brother the High Chief of Novgorod and legitimized bastard son of the Duke of Kiev.

We begin in September 15th, 1066; by July of 1067, close ally of the nascent Rurikid dynasty Harold Hardrade has died unexpectedly and his son Olav II does not press their claim to England. Meanwhile, I have absolutely no options to do much of anything, which means of course I need to mass my troops (all 200 of 'em!) for war on the pagans while I wait for daddy to die. When that occurs, I'll inherit some three provinces near Hungary and become independent. Unfortunately, I have an Intrigue score of 3, meaning I can't kill him now.

This game could either get really interesting or go absolutely nowhere. Probably the second.

From a work to a work I was led to a work."

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

Actually, fuck this. After the End it is!

Extraction will take 2 hours and 15 minutes.

I can't complain, because computers are magic, but holy shit.

I enjoy meta-humor and self-deprecation. Annoying, right?

Goodbye.

The Empire is facing its first full sclae civil war for lower crown authority, this happened just after the disastrous holy war against the Abbassids who completely kicked our asses. During said war, one of the Emperor's sons rose in revolt to press his claim, he lost, then one of his bastard daughters rose and she lost.

edit: Says in the bottom text second byzantine holy war for lower crown authority, but i dont remember a first one, may have happened before i began the game or something. Or it was very very very brief.

Also this is the state of the Head of the Abbassid Caliphate, a possessed leper lunatic. Great combination would recommend.
