I'm not sure the Night King can animate the ageless dead. Pretty sure his necromancy is limited to the recently or mostly dead.

The dead down there have to be encased in stone, right? If they're just in little niches or whatever and no one thought that sheltering from necromantic zombies in a crypt was a bad idea, then that's bizarre.

Not entirely sure about that, though, since actual skeletons ambushed Bran and his party when they arrived at the weirwood tree beyond the wall to meet Max Sydow.

I don't want Brienne to die :'( But really the happier they were in episode two, the more likely they are to die.

I also think that Jorah will probably die. Theon may die, since his redemption arch is fully complete and there's not much more they can do with the character. Also possibly Varys

I really hope Tyrion doesn't die, I would be upset if they killed him off in the third episode, because for so long he's been one of the most important players in the game. I feel like his arch isn't really complete, and that he should play a bigger roll in the finale.

Yes, but the question is were they resurrected as skeletons, or have they waisted away to skeletons by being exposed to the environments for so long. Seems to me its the latter, because if it were the former the dead wouldn't stay dead even if they been hit with dragon glass.

I personally disagree, if only the metric of "recently dead" is pretty ambiguous, but all this is speculation anyway, and we'll learn the truth in a few days anyhow.

A bit ambiguous yeah, clear enough to explain why dead and buried bodies stay dead. Rather than the writers forgetting and realizing they put all the north's women and children in an all you can eat buffet

Well, I don't believe they forgot. I know these guys have a huge team of people editing and helping with rewrites, I feel like this was a deliberate choice - if my theory is true.

That would then also mean that, John the guy who's spent the last 4 years doing everything he can to stop the Night King, up to and including losing his own life in the process, the one guy who is most likely to know better, with the exception of omniscient Bran, is a colossal dumb ass. That'd be pretty piss poor writing in my opinion.

Yes but as I also included Bran, the Three eyed raven who is literally omniscient (at least in terms of past and present), knows everything about the Night King, also didn't know about it.

And your solution introduces the problem of the Night King's powers being blocked by Stone, which is a plot hole unto itself.

How do you make that last connection? The way I see it, dragonglass basically breaks the WW spell and the Wight returns to what he naturally is, a dead body. So it doesn't matter if he is a flesh-zombie, a skeleton or anything in-between.

I mean that the dead would be blocked by the stone. As in, raising the dead isn't much use if they're trapped in a little stone box.

Best explanation I can muster is the dead of Winterfell, at some point, have been cremated. Or at least burned Supernatural style. Otherwise everyone is being really, really, really stupid.

I’m pretty sure she was saying that the NK doesn’t have to raise the dead in the crypts to threaten them, they can bust in some other way to threaten the civilians, not that stone blocks the NK’s power.

Yes but then the NK could just recast reanimation and get his skeleton army back. The rules of the show however seem to suggest that once a weight is hit with dragon glass or Vsteel, it's dead for good and can't come back. So either the NK's spell is 1 time only, which seems dumb, or he can't animate bodies past a certain point, which makes a certain amount of sense.
