She can bring shadows into the world, which seems to be an even more powerful act; so I'd assume she can.

IIRC, only some priests of R'hllor have been able to do it. Seems to be still quite rare.

We'll see in The Winds of Winter eh. If Jon dies but is brought back to life, I think Melisandre will have a role in that.

Oh boy, A Song of Ice and Fire thread.
I must admit to being a giant nerd, I've read and reread all five of the books and own seasons 1-3 on DVD. I've reread GoT two times, ACoK, ASoS and AFfC three times and ADwD two times. I've also read a portion of TPatQ and am looking forward to reading TRP. If anyone has read and finished either feel free to tell me if they are worth finishing. I believe it goes without saying I will be first in line to buy the world book, TWoW and ADoS. I also play the Crusader Kings II AGoT mod with near religious fervor and obsession. I could most likely name all the Targaryen Kings in order from Aegon the Conqueror to Aerys the Mad. Yeah. I'm that nerdy.

I actually think I pushed out my memory of US presidents just so I could memorize that. I forgot who came before Lincoln, but I know exactly where Viserys II goes!

Aegon I (the Conqueror)
Aenys
Maegor (the Cruel)
Jaehaerys I (the Wise)
Viserys I
Aegon II/Rhaenyra (I always found myself siding with the Blacks, despite both of them being terrible)
Aegon III (Dragonsbane)
Daeron I (the Young Dragon)
Baelor (the Blessed)
Viserys II
Aegon IV (the Unworthy)
Daeron II (the Good)
Aerys I
Maekar
Aegon V
Jaehaerys II
Aerys II (the Mad)
Daenerys (the rightful monarch of the Seven Kingdoms. It's all in one, continuous line for me)

I wouldn't care. Dany is still better, and she certainly has the tools to do the job.

So, the line of succession only matters when it favors your favored characters? And also, we really don't know how good a monarch Aegon would be; Varys certainly seems to think he would do a good job. Also, what has Dany really done to exemplify herself as a great ruler?

It's less about the birthright and more about the sword. Dany has better swords than any other claimant, really.

Honestly, she isn't the greatest ruler yet. She is a flawed character, but that's why I love her. She learns from her mistakes, though...

So, once she gets back from the Dothraki Sea with a strong Khalasar at her back, things will inevitably be better.

You are correct in the order of kings, but I wouldn't include claimants like Rhaenyra and Daenerys as they lost or have never sat the Iron Throne. I also supported the Blacks, mostly because Viserys the 1st had always intended for Rhaenyra to rule although how good of a Queen she would have been... I'm really looking forward to the story of the Kingsguards Arryk and Erryk. If you don't remember they were twins who supported different claimants during The Dance. During a battle (I believe it will be the taking of Kings Landing) they slew each other apparently with tears in their eyes.

Arryk/Erryk are basically legends, their deaths and actions well detailed in all those tales and songs Sansa used to talk about so much. Whoever Left and Right's parents were probably decided to name their set of twins after the twin heroes of the Kingsguard.

Can't remember, but it wouldn't surprise me. GRRM wanted to give certain characters the same names as one another to avoid the One Steve Limit trope.

The whole thing was just stupid. Roose Bolton is a vampire? Mance Rayder is Rhaegar Targaryen, to be added to the long list of pretty much every character who is secretly a Targaryen? Benjen Stark is Daario Naharis? The Greyjoys are somehow going to sail all the way around Westeros, pick up Daenerys and her entire army, and take her across the narrow sea to let her take the Iron Throne (which I get the feeling the Greyjoys aren't a massive fan of) without raping her, stealing her dragons, killing or enslaving her soldiers, and generally doing the sort of glorified pirate stuff we expect from House Greyjoy?

What about: everyone will die and Hodor will sit on Iron Throne as last man in Westeros? :P
"Those who reached my boundary, their seed is not; their hearts and their souls are finished forever and ever. As for those who had assembled before them on the sea, the full flame was their front before the harbour mouths, and a wall of metal upon the shore surrounded them. They were dragged, overturned, and laid low upon the beach; slain and made heaps from stern to bow of their galleys, while all their things were cast upon the water." - Ramesses III., Battle of the Delta

Magnificent read, though I might just feel that way because I'm a "Northern-Stark-Fanboy" too.

On a side note: couldn't the series name A Song of Ice and Fire be suggestive of Jon, who may well be both Stark and Targaryen?

It has been suggested that the name hints at R+L=J being true, yes.

Quite possibly as a secondary meaning, though the primary meaning of the title is almost certainly the return of the Dragons and the Others at roughly the same time (and, hopefully, eventual glorious dragon v other combat.)
Speaking of which, where were the Dragons during the Long Night? I mean, there's no mention of them in all the legends surrounding the Long Night; presumably they were around some time beforehand (or atleast existed in legend) since the legends make reference to Dragonglass (as opposed to calling it Obsidian) and Dragonsteel. Do Dragons possibly have a habit of going extinct and returning?

Technically they never went extinct. True extinction not only requires an absence of living individuals, but also an absence of eggs, seeds, whatever. Since there are probably quite a few dragon eggs floating around in various places, all of which are basically fossilised, dragons have been not-extinct for millions of years.

Didn't care much for the Boltons in the books, but after seeing Ramsay and Roose's portrayal in the show, I hope they flay Stannis alive.
