He jokingly referred to it as the Simarillion (the GRRMillion) but I don't think it can really compare in quality to Tolkien's work.

Yeah, HBO actually brought in a linguist to construct some of the fictional languages for the show.

Tolkien and Quality in the same sentence?

Considering basically every fantasy writer in the past 50 years including GRRM stole ideas and mythology from Tolkien's work, yeah, I'd say he's pretty well liked.

Also, unlike ASoIaF, LoTR actually has a good screen adaptation and videogames.

If you are trying to imply that Tolkien is not a quality writer i have no response other than condescending laughter.

Its a fucking tv series based on a set of books, it is not going to come anywhere close to the level of influence the bible has on humanity.

Well yes seeing as Tolkien is an amazing writer who basically made the fantasy genre into what it is today then I would say his work is pretty high quality.

Okay yes GoT has set a precedent for tv shows but to claim it is more influential than the bible is laughable.

Give me more diversionary landscape descriptions and weird old men in forests! More, I say, more! Conclude that character arc off-page well before the end of the first book! A lengthy prologue describing a bourgeois fantasy version of rural England!

Tolkien certainly influenced the genre, and he certainly had his strengths (prose being the obvious one) but his work is also weird and unconventional and in many places sorely lacking in character drama*. Pretty much no one these days tries to write the sort of "Archaic Epic" that Tolkien was doing, and there's loads of stuff in LotR that would never get past a modern editor, so to say he made the genre what it is today is a huge oversimplification. Launching it into the mainstream and establishing certain tropes would be closer to the truth, I think. It's grown and changed enormously; I just went through the last thirty-odd fantasy books on my Goodreads and really none of them bear much, if any, resemblance to Tolkien's work. Some of them have maps, a vaguely medieval setting, or an inhuman force of evil, but that's about it. One of them has elves, but it's almost thirty years old.

IM is being snide and excessively negative, and I doubt he's at all inclined or indeed able to talk about what supposedly makes Tolkien's work bad, but we shouldn't uncritically declare Tolkien "amazing" just because of his influence.

Didn't you compare The Bells to the moon landing in terms of cultural achievement? If you don't like The Lord of the Rings, that's fine, but don't pretend that a culturally monumental series who's writer spent decades inventing complex cosmologies and languages for is inferior when you're championing a tv show because you liked the ending.

I can actually imagine that, there would be independence movements in the North, Iron Islands and possibly Dorne, the Lannisters would definitely own a mining company, Essos would probably be divided into nation-states engaged in multiple civil conflicts along with causing refugees to flee into Westeros. This could actually make quite an interesting show, shame we'll never get it along with a Robert's Rebellion prequel but at least we can dream.

I'm completely satisfied with Jaime Lannister and Cersei's arc. My only regret is that they didn't focus an entire episode on Cersei + Jaime for the final season to properly close it.

They could have executed it better but the concept was good.

Pretty much describes the entire second half of the show.
