Weird how everyone in the city can hear those people shouting about bells.

Oh cool, there's Danaerys slaughtering innocent people for no reason. Very cool. Well written. BRB, gotta boil my eyes in bleach.

Like, what the fuck, she is just torching the whole city. She knows where Cersei is and she's strafing random houses. What absolute bullshit. Kill Danaerys when?

Oh fuck off Euron. No one wants you here.

And there goes the wildfire.

There's no way Jaime should be alive. What even are renal arteries?

Ahaha, fucking Qyburn. Anyway, Cleganebowl, I guess.

Sweet, here's Jaime to kill Cersei.

Not really considering the last army they had there died as they were pulling back to kings landing after having abandoned the westerlands.

It's true that the last Reach army was destroyed, but since Danny didn't occupy any part of the Reach why would you assume the lords then switched sides or bailed out of the war?

Last time we left them, they betrayed the Tyrells and were loyal to the Crown.

Army gone =/= switched sides/opted out of the war

They're not in open rebellion against the Crown, the show would have mentioned it. So it can only be assumed that they are still paying dues to the Iron Throne.

Remember that the Reach is the most populated region, it can always raise a new levy or new conscript armies and replace its losses (its not like the Vale or the North which have a harder time replacing losses)

Ah, the old "Run him through and he doesn't care" move. I remember that from The Fellowship.

What if 9/11, but Westeros?

ARYA. GO KILL DANAERYS.

Fuck Cleganebowl. Sandor deserved better.

Ah yeah, Danaerys just casually killing HER OWN FORCES instead of Cersei. Fucking great. Lads, someone turn this show off and spare me.

That is not true in any way shape or form. It's not true of history and it's exactly the kind of thing the show and books spent great lengths demonstrating as false. I do not understand how you are a fan of the show, and yet have the exact wrong impression about what it's about. You don't need a decisive battle. In the war of the 5 Kings 4 of the titular kings were assassinated and while Stannis died as a result of a decisive battle that wasn't even slightly necessary to take him down.

I mean for fucks sake you're talking about how the characters wouldn't think to be cunning or strategic in the show whose entire selling point is the cunning and strategy of the characters.

Where King's Landing was concerned, it's always had huge symbolic value.

From a 21st century point of view there was no reason to hold KL, Joffrey could have taken his army, marched them out of KL, grouped with Tywin's army, and then made a new base of operations in another Crownland city to fight Stannis. With the Lannister gold advantage, sooner or later they may have won.

KL had no irreplaceable economic value. There was no reason to risk 1/3 of the entire royal army against Stannis even with a defensive advantage (Stannis was the predicted winner overall by sheer numbers). Not from a 21st century point of view anyhow...

However, POLITICALLY SPEAKING it was understood based on the assumptions of the day that the commoners would recognise whoever occupied KL at the end of Blackwater as the winner of the war. "What King Who Runs Won't Be King For Long" wasn't just a saying, it was a statement of the political reality.

Blackwater had huge political repercussions.

It signalled to Roose that the war was over (and solidified his decision to betray Robb) and it signalled to most of the realm that Joffrey's reign was secure.

Stannis himself understood Blackwater to be a MAJOR BLOW against his reputation as a credible threat. In fact, it later influenced his decision not to retreat from his march to Winterfell, he understood that politically he could not afford a second retreat. It was important for the king to be seen (always) as someone who could fight and win decisive battles.

You couldn't take a throne by avoiding the ennemy army or "choking them"... it wouldn't be seen as a honourable.

Decisive battles like the Battle of the Bastards and Blackwater was how you asserted domination.

...

With these narrative assumptions, it makes sense that Danny would want to fight now.

The only thing I don't really understand is Daenarys torching the city, instead of just the Red Keep. Like yeaah, you said you wanna save people from Cersei. But Cersei ain't in house number 231.

Tyrion: Dany, if you hear bells, that means they surrender. got it?
Dany: Ya, sure. sure. bells, ringing. no fire. got it.

*10 seconds later*

Dany: oh! I hear bells! That means burn everything!

Because the show's trying to set her up as the insane final boss, it's just that D&D are too bored and lazy to actually add some nuance to create an actual story about that.

They wanna make Star Wars dammit, just let them make Star Wars already, chairs and dragons are stupid, meh...

Daenerys is an homage to Sauron from the Lord of the Rings:

When Daenerys invades Westeros, her armies and forces consist of:

>An army of obedient and disciplined eunuch soldiers who feel no pain
>A savage horde of 100,000 Dothraki screamers and bloodriders
>Tattooed slave freaks
>Brutal torturers who wear the masks of bronze beasts
>The scum of the East
>Exiles and traitors
>Sellsword companies without honour and brutal mercenaries
>Reaving Ironborn raiders and pirates and a fleet of savages who drown their enemies and rape their women
>Cultist extremists who follow a vicious God of Fire, who demands blood sacrifice in the form of burning innocents alive
>Enormous dragons- fire made flesh to burn cities to the ground and to melt the skin off men

When she arrives in Westeros, she won't be seen as a savior. One look at her army and any Westerosi are going to think a foreigner horde from hell has arrived. Her forces directly parallel the forces of Sauron in Lord of the Rings. An eastern menace.

The reason why she's Sauron is because GRRM always admitted he hated how Sauron was too one dimensional in his villainy, and that he wondered what Sauron's actual motivations were.

Dany will cause despicable carnage to Westeros, and because we've been following her for so long, some people will sympathise with her demented cause of destroying Westeros with hostile foreigner, because we've seen this villain's side of the story.

It's also worth noting that the name of this series is A Song of Ice and Fire- it's a reference to Robert Frost's poem, Fire and Ice.
So if you have ideas of this series ending in the good forces of fire against the evil forces of ice, you'll be wrong.
Robert Frost's poem is about death. Ice is a bitter cold death, and fire is a passionate explosive death. Dany and her dragons are as much of a threat to our story as the Others are.

Sort of hoping Daenerys just kills everyone at this point. Seems like that the leak I saw on r/FreeFolk (can't remember whether it was the subreddit or the discord channel I saw it on first) was true (has been with both this and the previous episode). Seems like it'll be true for next episode? Not massively surprised. As they say, "hope is the first step on the road to disappointment".

Varys' death confirmed how much I've come to loathe this season, it's some of the laziest and poorest writing I've seen in a long time. Despite disliking the direction they took Littlefinger's death, at least it had some emotion behind it. One of the most important characters in the series just gets incinerated by a dragon with only so much as a half-apology from Tyrion. He's not even mad he was betrayed by someone who's life he saved, and no one shows any emotion at all. Apparently he's killed instantly with no pain either considering how silent and quick it was. How do you manage to make someone getting set on fire by a giant lizard boring?

i actually thought the way the GC went out was a good nod to who they really are in the books. In the books they rarely ever fight, instead just casting a reputation of being the best force money can buy. But what we find out is that if they actually had to fight they’d probably lose handedly. They’re mostly just for show.

Be in the show they show up only to get Merced by the dragons. It was a nice little thing

Well, mercenaries tend not to just be for show. They're literally hired killers/soldiers, so one would assume they're good at actually fighting, even if they're not necessarily trustworthy (after all, many battles in history have been decided when mercenaries switched sides at important points). Skill at fighting is one thing, loyalty is another. Still, the Golden Company are meant to be famous for being good at what they do, and for not breaking their contracts, so perhaps they're also a bit more loyal than the average mercenary company.

This season will likely end as a 5-6/10 in terms of its quality independent of the show and a 1/10 in terms of its quality in context of the show. All in all, it brought a show that I considered arguably the greatest media property of all time to a mere 8/10 ( great ) overall. The four 10/10's from seasons 1-4 four just barely keep it at that level. Breaking Bad, Sopranos and Mad Men still reign as the trinity. Real shame.
