::shrug:: i thought it was fine. She moved like a faceless man through the whole army and ganked the NK assassins creed style. Worked for me really. Honestly What I wanted from that scene was a little emotion from Bran. I know that would have been out of character, but when he looks over the Night King's shoulder and sees Arya flying like Etzio, I wanted to see like a small smirk or chuckle.

yes, the Faceless Men are the best assassins out there, but even then.. these are White Walkers. I find it extremely difficult to believe that she could have just sneaked behind magical monsters like that. If you wanted to highlight her Faceless Man training, then have her sneak in with the face of a wight or something.

Back in Seasons 6-7

Jon: "We don't have enough men. This NK is going to kill us all with his giant army. We need the Wildlings, we need the help of the Lannisters, we need EVERYONE."

Meanwhile, since Season 7 Bran has been 100% chilling because he KNEW that "sigh... this NK is just a noob anyways. He's destined to die if I just death stare at him for long enough. I just have to keep my mouth shut so history runs as it should and everyone is in the right place. I would tell Jon to chill because he's really stressed out over nothing but SHRUGS...."

I don't know why people are so underwhelmed or shocked by this ending. The discussed the episode before it that the whole battle was a sort of feint. They can't kill the Night King with his army around, so Bran is used to draw the Night King out into the open away from his actual army. Arya couldn't have just slipped into Morder and killed him, he had to be brought into the open. Then she could go all Assassins Creed on his ass.

why were Jon and Danny riding those dragons? I mean, they dont actually do anything to help, and the dragons seem to already know where to go and what to do. Them riding the dragons 8nto battle just seems like an insane and unnecessary risk.

other questions about the night king: 1. His powers have no time limit, even the ancient dead can be resurrected. 2. His powers work more on AoE rather than line of sight.

Honestly surprised by the crypt raise. Expected it, but ancient skeletons literally disintegrate into bone dust in ~a century if exposed to air, which those big burial boxes would have been. Technically, there shouldn’t really have been much left to resurrect.

]True but I imagine those skeletons were preserved to some extent. Some mummification process. Plus the subarctic environment would have helped.

No no no, skeletons last forever, that’s Hollywood science. Does raise the question of why the North doesn’t have a tradition of burning their dead though. Seems like something that would have started up after the Long Night.

Also, for everyone talking about how they didn’t have enough men, yeah, they didn’t. If Arya didn’t show up right then, the reinforcements the Night King raised would have killed everyone, except Jon who would have died to Vyserion and Bran who would have died to the Night King himself. That’s the whole point of drawing him out, because he can’t be beaten in a conventional battle. Even if he loses, and assuming he can’t raise the same dead twice, he can just raise the freshly killed enemies and have a new army, ready to fight your tired and battered one.

I'm...disappointed. People here mused that the entire 8 seasons undead plotline would be wrapped up in one episode, I couldn't believe it would be that simple...lo and behold, it was. Looks like Cersei had the right idea all along, which in retrospect means that everything team Dany did in the second half of Season 7, including the Wight Hunt and the truce, helped Cersei's cause.

As per usual, the grand spectacle leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Like for example, what is Bran's purpose after all? He didn't contribute anything to the battle other than warging into some ravens to do...what exactly? Annoy the udead dragon? Was it even shown?
Overall, why does the 3ER even exist and why was the NK so obsessed to him? He called himself "the world's memory" but prior to Bran returning to Winterfell, nobody other than the Reeds and Bran himself was even aware of his existence. After Bran arrives at Winterfell, the only thing he contributes to the good guys' cause is spoilering Littlefinger's non-sensical schemes. .in regards to the NK and the AotD, he did nothing that defied or undermined his actions in any way. He wargs into some ravens to see that the dead are coming - which people already knew - and other than that just sits around. Pretty much the only thing he actually does is drawing the NK to Winterfell. So, seeing how the 3ER isn't actually an obstacle to the NK overrunning the world, why does the latter even care about him? And if he absolutelly has to kill Bran (because reasons) why does he have to approach Bran in person while the battle was still going on, when he simply could have this zombie horde butchering every living soul in Winterfell including Bran, while chilling somewhere in the distance?

I liked some of the visuals. The dragons not really (most of the time, I couldn't really see/understand what they were doing, though I lol'ed when Drogo and Rhaegal crashed into each other. Don't drink and drive.) but the NK emerging from the flames T-800 style, smirking, was pretty badass. As were his totally OP powers of being able to raise all the dead, all the time. That's how I picture undead in fantasy settings - you have to go for the necromancers because you simply can't beat them by attrition.

Ninja Turtle Arya coming flying out of nowhere and one-hit-killing was silly tough, and rather cheap a twist.

[1]Yeah Cersei made the smart move not sending her army north, but it's only smart because they won. If they hadn't won it would have been a blunder. She gambled, and won. It happens. The characters might have inadvertently helped her cause but they had no way of knowing that would be the outcome. That's the irony of life.

[2] The 3ER isn't an inherently military asset, nor is his purpose expressly towards defeating the Night King. He's sort of a living history archive, he's omniscient, aware of the true history of the world. The Night King's goal is the complete destruction of all things living, as that's what he was created to do, raise the dead and fight off the First Men. As long as the 3ER exists, history exists, knowledge exists. Knowledge of history is the best weapon against the dead. By taking out the 3ER the living would be without their repository of knowledge. This makes sense for the Night Kings motives as the NK is as old as the 3ER. However, humans do have a second repository of knowledge, the Maester's Citadel, whatever it's called. Not nearly as useful as a living repository of knowledge but useful none the less. It would make sense that this would have been his next target, had he not been killed at the Battle of Winterfell.

[3] Arya is a faceless man, a trained assassin. Her going all Assassins Creed flying through the air to deliver the killing blow, is completely within her character. Might be a little over the top, but it's not like it came out of left field, like if say John or Sansa did it. It's well within her wheelhouse to be able to do it that way. I personally dug it.

The episode was to long. I understand why the lighting was done the way it was, but I would rather see what was going on.
And why does ghost look so damm small?

It would be way better payoff for Jaime and Brienne to die in the final act in King's Landing.

Sam is arguably the character most likely to survive, I mean, didn't GRRM say he was essentially himself?

Agree with you on Grey Worm, though I would have preferrred to have either Tormund or Gendry go too.

Any thoughts on Gilly? It looked like she got killed by the Wights in the Crypt but it was so chaotic I could not really tell.

Gilly is fine. In the "survivors" scene in the crypt she''s standing all the way to the right with little Sam.

Why do you consider it "poor"? It's an amazing battle that depicts the feelings of dread and hopelessness perfectly. What would you do differently?

Also, pour one out for Lyanna Mormont, Giant Slayer, Great Bear of the North, the only death that actually upset me.

That I did not expect. Lyanna and Jorah were the last members of the Mormont family. The writers killed an old and loved northern house just like that.

Come to think of it the show has erased a LOT of historical and important houses so far. Martell, Mormont, Baratheon, Bolton, Frey etc. In contrast to the books.

You oversimplify what happened.

Arya reached the Night King because 1) Bran baited him to the Godswood 2) Melissandre gave Arya the courage to go there 3) The faceless men trained Arya to move without making too much noise 4) Bran gave Arya an obsidian dagger in that same place 5) The Hound and Beric fiercely protected her. The whole thing was a very collective effort. And both the NK and another WW died because they were struck by dragonglass and varyrian materials, not because Arya and Jon were godly warriors.

Bran gave her the Vsteel dagger that was supposed to be used to kill Bran, that was used to kill Baelish and was used to kill the NK.
