Actually, Kylo's lightsaber is a very good idea.

It can protect yourself from getting your hand chopped off, you know, like what happens in most of the movies.

It guides those strikes to your arm or the top part of the lightsaber instead.
Which means you'll lose an arm or your weapon instead.

If you managed to block the sword, that is, otherwise you'll still lose your hand.


The answer against hand-chopping of moves is wearing light-saber resistant armour, not using a ridiculous lightsaber.

That's not how cross guards work.

It'd have to be made with lighsaber resistant material to be able to be used as an actual crossguard.
As it is, I think it's the perfect fit for the character of Kylo Ren. Unstable, atypical.

Well, The lightsabers are cool.
But too much relying on the "rule of cool" and you end up with loads of CGI, nonsensical fights and the monstrosity known as Kylo Ren's lightsaber.

Those aren't exactly helping the suspension of disbelief.
