You'd better believe I'm a bitter Bernie Sanders supporter. The Dems fucked up and fucked up hard. Hopefully they'll learn that neoliberalism and maintaining the status quo isn't the way to win this election or any other one. I doubt they will, though.

You and I are opposites there then mates. I actually didn't want something new and different, I wanted something that would feel right at home in the SW universe, and on that JJ delivered in spades. I was actually happy that there wasn't so much Deus ex Machina. Stuff that happened was explained and set up. The Resistance showing up to save the day? Was set up. Solo just happening upon his old ship? Explained. Even Finn's defection didn't feel forced. I especially liked when Finn was like "it's the right thing to do" And Poe essentially responded with "bullshit"

Actually the only thing that Irked me about Ren's defeat was the convenient chasm opening up between them. That was forced. Him being defeated, but not destroyed however I thought was fitting, Ren isn't a true sith yet, he's an apprentice. He's powerful, but not thoroughly trained. (Freezing weapon blasts was a nice touch). Rey is more powerful than he is, but untrained. She is however so obviously Luke's daughter. Luke left her on that planet, to hide her from Ren, after Ren fucked all that shit up, the same way Luke and Lea were hidden from Vader. It's subtly played and never expressly spoken, but there is a recognition from all the Skywalkers. Lea recognizes her as family almost instantly. That hug she gives her is more than just I "know you liked Han too." It was hugging someone she never thought she'd see again. And Rey even had the struggled moment where she was confused on "I know this person" Han figured it out less quickly. The give away on that was when Maz asked "So who's the girl." And Luke's response is clear recognition of who this girl is, and her desperate facial expression is knowing the truth but needing it to be confirmed, needing her father to embrace her. Even Ren, is intrigued with her, as if he's certain he knows her, but just can't quite put his finger on from where.

The other thing that irked me was, how I knew Han was dead as soon as they pulled out the bottomless pit scene.

As for the droid, I actually thought BB-8 was great, and unfairly judged for being a soccer ball. People may not dig the design, but I thought he was actually quite endearing, and probably had the character presence GL wished he could have gotten out of R2.

Don't get me wrong. I didn't want unexplained events. I didn't want a Deus ex Machina or anything like that. Just a certain level of uniqueness that set TFA apart from the original trilogy. The film was a great homage to A New Hope, but if you were looking for something original and new like I was you wouldn't have found it.
Maybe, but I still thought it was fitting. People don't really thing about it now, given how substantiated everything is, but SW:ANH didn't really explain anything either. You were just tossed into the middle of the Universe and had to keep up. "Clone wars? Jedi? The Republic before the Empire? Lea?" None of this stuff was ever explained in the first movie.

As was Vader, but I wouldn't not call him a true Sith.

Vader was also a trained Jedi Knight of the republic, turned Sith, and had been doing the Emperor's bidding, for 20 years at the time of Episode IV. He was a certified and solidified BAMF. Ren is still young, probably about the same age Anakin was in Episode 2. Powerful, and trained to an extent but still woefully unrefined. Not to mention in need of some therapy.

Eh. I think she should have hugged Chewbacca, one of her oldest friends, before Rey, but whatever. That's semantics.

Chewy is indeed an old friend, but she had already been reacquainted with him before the big battle. Lei was being reaquainted with her niece (whom she might have thought dead at Ren's hand) for the first time. Touching moment.

That was obvious the moment she touched Luke's lightsaber. That scene was pretty cool.

That too, but the way it was so solidified through nuance I was actually quite impressed.

Hardly. He was trained well enough by Luke to destroy the New Jedi Order and run his old Master into obscurity. I'm not saying his defeat wasn't justified. His being shot by Chewbacca and injured a couple of times by Finn makes his defeat logical.

Given he didn't do it alone, but with his own order of Knights, no doubt formed by Snoke, I don't think you can really claim Ren was the sole force there. He was a cog in the gears. Luke also wasn't driven into obscurity, but had to go into obscurity to find the first Jedi Temple, so he could become a greater Jedi, learning the secrets of the originals. He couldn't do that and look after Rey, so he did what he had to do.

also a check against Ren being on the same level of Vader. Vader wouldn't have gotten hit by that.

I think one of a few reason Rey beat Ren was because he was probably very surprised by her sudden comback. Probably will add to his inferiority complex

I was quite pleased with the movie. Luke has a 10/10 beard.

My only big complaints:
-The Starkiller is VERY Abrams, and a bit of a 'one up' on the Death Stars. Is Kevin Anderson still around? You could've tried to get his permission to use the Sun Crusher instead. That would've been a nice nod to the EU...but I guess Disney's trying to avoid that.

-Chewie totally brushes past Leia after returning to the Rebel Resistance base. You would figure the two most important people in Han's life would share a moment after his death. But I guess that wouldn't work. Maybe they'll put it in the special edition?

-Hologram technology has clearly improved a lot in the past few years.

I'd also like to say that, while Han's death was shocking, I liked that he got the ultimate viking funeral. A whole PLANET of his foes went down with him.

The stormtrooper legions will serve him in Forcehalla.
I AM DISAPPOINTED

As for the movie as a whole, there's not much I can say that hasn't been said already in all these spoiler posts^.....but I absolutely loved it. I am once again PUMPED about Star Wars. Yeah, it was predictable for anyone who has seen A New Hope, but I thought it did a great job of tying the two trilogies together and setting the stage for Episodes XIII and IX to really soar on their own.

I liked it a great deal.

All the new cast are terrific - Boyega is great, but Ridley is just amazing, and Isaac was pretty awesome in the limited time he had. Rogue One's going to have him, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Ben Mendelsohn in it, which is just the most ridiculously stacked cast. Already can't wait.

It looked and sounded great, which is to be expected. It was genuinely funny. It feels like the Finn/Rey thing got rushed just a little too much, but I get that it needed to be there and this was already a 2 hour + movie.

I loved that they actually decided to give Chewie a personality, and I'm laughing thinking that Mark Hamill was actually paid to be in this thing. Good for him, but man...all of twenty seconds and no actual lines. BB-8 is fucking adorable. C-3P0's cameo was perfect. I expect we'll be seeing more of Captain Phasma, given that she had about twenty seconds of screentime and Christie never took the helmet off.

While they did copy literally every story beat from ANH, it all pretty much worked - with a franchise like this, the movie's story objectives were basically to set the tone and introduce all the new characters, which it did an excellent job of. The one thing that did get taken too far was the Sun-Shotgunner, or whatever it was - can we please be a little more creative? It felt like even the characters were mocking how obvious a repeat setup it was. Also, I didn't really get which planets were getting blown up or why - was that Coruscant? Or what?

Oh Jesus, Han. I guess the mystery of how they got Harrison Ford back just got solved - his deal must have been that he had to get killed off. They turned him into the Ben Kenobi of the movie and I didn't even realize it until he was about five seconds out from being dead. Man, what a bleak way to handle the Han/Leia thing.

Well as other said, probably to try and stave off the pain abit, and he does have an inferiority complex, he was probably losing it because he was being hit so much, felt like a failure probably. Remember those scenes were he just goes fucking ballistic and wails on the environment around him with his lightsaber? The guy is not stable, he is very conflicted and prone to intense bursts of anger the second something goes wrong.

TBH the parallels with IV and the Obi Wan-Vader duel were obvious once Rey and Finn were watching them. I actually thought Kylo would stand down for a bit, though.

So... Much... Symbolism!
I mean, the destruction of Coruscant - definitely an attack on the bad writing of the prequels and a promise to do better.
Luke's Empire lightsaber - a promise to be loyal to the OT.

I'm not too sure, but I don't think it was Coruscant. I believe that was the Hosnian System, the planet that looked like Coruscant was Hosnian Prime.
