You'll want a newer gen card.

Several upcoming games will have higher VRAM requirements in the 3 GB and 4 GB range.

From what I can tell, dual 7850s competes with a single 280X.
You'd probably have to go to a 290 to beat dual 7870s.
However!
One fast card is almost always better than two slow ones, even if the two slow cards beat the one fast one. Microstutter and the occasional game that doesn't support it will always get in the way.

I'd say go for a 290.

But at this point in time I would recommend the GTX 970.

Multiple partitions FTW,

I'm running W7 most of the time, but also Linux on the side and TAILS when i'm doing other stuff.

Anyways, anyone else running a 650TI here?

I have a 40GB partition in my boot SSD that I use exclusively for Battlefield 4.

I used to have my 1TB drive partitioned up with Linux on it but it just became too much of a hassle. Now I just run VMs.

I've looked into running a SSD for a lot of my more-intense games (BF4, GTA, ect), How improved is performance?

BF's load times are cut into a third. I'm usually the first one on the field.

Most other games generally won't notice a difference. It doesn't really improve performance, just loading times.

I can imagine that that always happens.
The retroactive un-re-de-renouncement of the 285X probably made matters worse, because the proposed "GCN Refresh" (comprising the 285, 285X, 295X, among others) now basically consists of only the 285.
Whatever this bullshit "redpill/bluepill" thing is, it better be GOOD. Commmmme on R9 380X!

980 = timed disaster. There's going to be another card above it, that's for sure. Getting a 980 now is like getting a single 780.

Not really.

The performance is already impeccable.

If you want the best, then wait a little while longer.

If you want really good, get the GTX 980.

AMD's high end cards are pretty much useless now.

But honestly, the GTX 980 is not the star of GM204.

The GTX 970 is.

At 200USD less, you still have 4GBs of VRAM the same bus width, 64 ROT and whatnot.

It gets just 10-15fps less in a lot of games, but still easily breaks the 60fps barrier in 1080p games.

It does 4k at 2-5fps less than the 980.

It performs 2-10fps less than the 290x in games at full HD.

It shreks.

I have just been informed that this is actually still a thing. There's literally a keyputer on sale right now with an i5 and 6GB of DDR3 ram.

Has anyone here ever used the Ultimate Edition Gamers OS? I wanna know if it's any good before I install it on a thousand dollar gaming laptop.

Never heard of it but from what a quick google search has told me it's nothing special.

Also keep in mind that when you install a new OS on a laptop you lose all of your drivers.

Computers built. In short a constantly high frame rate with no drops all of which on max graphics and very little temperature gain throughout the board as well as GPU and CPU respectably.
Just a average person! Is that too straight forward?

To be fair, that's akin to saying that it can play 2048. Those games aren't intensive at all.

I will start off with the specs of my computer:

CPU: AMD FX-8350 (4.0GHz 8-Core)
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB DDR3-1600
Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+
PSU: EVGA NEX650G Gold (650W Modular)

My Issue:

TL;DR CPU seems to be overheating after ~5 minutes of computer being started and BIOS seems to be shutting the computer down to prevent damage.

Note: I do not have any OS installed on this PC as this is an entirely brand new build, the computer will not stay on long enough to install an OS.

When I have my CPU powered it gets hot after just being powered up. It will stay on long enough for me to get into BIOS, which I think the last temperature I saw listed was around 70c, or 158f. In comparison, my current build gets around 50c-60c under full load (rarely) with a stock cooler.

My troubleshooting steps so far:

  • I have put on the stock cooler over my original third party variant, the heatsink becomes extremely hot to the touch after just a few minutes of being on and the fan being on full blast.
  • I have put on a second heatsink and fan combo, a low profile type. Same issue as with stock cooler, though it seemed to last a couple minutes longer.
  • I have unplugged the eight pin connector that powers the CPU on the motherboard, the computer runs perfectly fine with no power connected to CPU. I left it on for three hours last night and it stayed on the entire time, never shutting off.

After the above three hours I turned off the computer, plugged in power to the processor again, computer shut off after several minutes.

Note: After the computer is shut off automatically, when turning back on it will shut off considerably sooner than the first time. If I wait a little and turn back on it will last the original amount.

Btw, when installing the third party cooler I did put on Arctic5 Silver thermal paste myself in a very thin layer spread out, didn't seem to help overall.

So what exactly could be the issue here? Obviously it has to be directly related to the processor, but I'm unsure if it's just a bad processor or something I am doing/a setting in BIOS is causing this problem.

70C isn't unsafe temperatures.
At least, I don't think so. Might be an :amd: issue, because my Intel rocks 90+ all day long.

But back to your problem.

1: Make sure you applied your thermal paste properly.
2: Make sure your heatsink is attached properly.
3: Make sure your fans are all functioning properly (NOTE: You should ALWAYS have more intake fans than outtake fans)
4: moar thermal paste
5: Try running it without the side panel

Ill specify a realistic computer (parts out) that I would want if I had the cash

Intel 5960X oc'ed to 7GHz with liquid nitrogen cooling
2x128GB DDR4 3133MHz
4x AMD R9 295X2 oc'ed to something crazy like 2GHZ via liquid nitrogen
4x 1TB SSD in RAID
6x 6TB HDD in RAID
[Insert some crazy motherboard]
2x 1600W PSU
6x 5K Monitors
Specially built desk to hold the huge motherboard with water cooling on the sides of the desk to make stuff extra cool

This would probably last me a very long time without any upgrades

Oh yeah, I have a troubleshooting problem, although I don't know if it is the CPU, Mobo or PSU.

I try to power on my computer, and the case fan turns on for a second. Following that, it shuts down. What should I do? Should I spent another $79.99 on a new mobo, should I get a new CPU (I would get an 8370 if I could), or should I replace my 6 month old i600 PSU.

Note: Half of the PSU's short lifetime was Dogecoin mining
