Oh yeah, R would be way easier for that. It's not too hard to get into if you understand the syntax of other programming languages (speaking as someone who's fairly new to it), which it seems you do.

I will give that a try one day, thanks for the advice. ^^ Current focus is on Python and me being busy with school stuff, but if I can be here, then I have free time to learn a new lang. :P

Looking for a lightweight email client to put on my P4 box with Slackware (preferably GTK+, as I don't want to install a bunch of unnecessary Qt stuff). Sylpheed is having issues getting my Gmail account synced, unfortunately. Suggestions?

If Thunderbird is too heavy for you but you want something graphical (ie not mutt or alpine), you basically don't have any options that support webmail out of the box.

The problem is modern email requires a web browser engine to render, so "lightweight" basically means "doesn't actually work" anymore. I mean you could try gnus, but that's probably not what you're looking for.

I guess I could try mutt. The other option, which I'm currently using, is the "basic HTML" Gmail web client, but I have multiple email addresses and I'm not particularly enthused with wasting my extremely limited system resources on a browser tab for each.

Yeah, I don't really care for Emacs (nor Vim). That is quite unfortunate. When did the web get so bloated?

I thought graphics cards cooler fans had dying bearings because it made weird noise and it didn't spin easily when I tried manually spin it. Bought replacement without checking more closely
Turns out it looks like one of the SATA cables had come loose and was scratching against it.

The TX#M series is very good (not sure about 650 specifically, but 750 and 850 have been well reviewed), but you might be able to get a better deal on a SeaSonic 650W. Maybe not at Gold level efficiency, but definitely 80+, and the sheer reliability of SeaSonic is unparalleled.

This one: https://www.howtogeek.com/658194/window ... les-again/

I have been thinking of giving up computing entirely, and considering a return to the traditional arts. I feel like I face a choice between an OS, whose latest version nags me to use a cloud service, an OS that neglects on privacy and pushes out broken updates, another OS that neglects on privacy, and an OS where I cannot run apps that I have been used to for years.

Or maybe I should just fade away before it drives me further down the rabbit hole of despair… there is always next time, and while nothing is perfect, it may be better than now.

There's virtually nothing you can't run on Linux these days, and it's trivially easy to set up a Windows Server VM for the one or two applications you've ever used that don't run on Linux.

Minoa's big issue is 3DS Max IIRC. Which doesn't run on Linux because Autodesk are assholes.

That seems like a good use of the VM to me.

If it runs on Windows 10, it runs on Windows Server 2019, and you have the added benefit of no adware pre-installed, no forced reboots, and a much slower release cycle coupled with very little of the bloatware that Windows 10 comes with.

The desktop computer can never die. It is the option of choice for video gamers and people like me who doubt that the full size ATX case is mandatory for performance. Most people do fine with one RTX 2080. For me, the RTX 2080 Ti and Super is a bit of an overkill.

I did this the other day. Turns out to be USD 10,000.

Don't worry, it's not one of those things where every parts is a must. Basically, I went to those pick-a-parts websites based in Singapore, and I picked the most expensive options and added every single add-on.

4 SSDs (11 TB total), 64 GB RAM, Office 365, Gaming Chair, Gaming KB and Mouse, Water Cooling,... every single expensive thing!

Even without the hysteria over the coronavirus, SSDs are still pricier than traditional HDDs, which is why most gaming machines tend to use both, with the SSD managing the system volumes, and the HDDs for the rest.
