I'm aware of what Daemon Tools is. It just creates a "fake" drive in Windows and then adapts iso files to it.
You can't boot from a fake drive. If you want to actually install Windows 10 from an ISO you'll have to burn it to a physical drive (be it a DVD or a USB key or whatever) because your BIOS needs to actually have something to boot to.

I literally just created an ISO, mounted it on a virtual drive, and installed Windows 10 Release on my computer last night.

It definitely can be done. Sure, the rest is kind of black magic, but it can be done.

On a machine already running Windows 7? Sure it didn't just run the upgrade service once it realized you were trying to run W10 install? Or did you do a full wipe of the disk and installed from the mounted drive?

It probably did the upgrade service.

Given the fact that I didn't really need it wiped (I've pretty much haven't downloaded anything or done any work in this computer other than reading).

The "upgrade service" does not instantly put me on Win10, right?

Well you still have to actually install it.

My computer still isn't up and running yet. If I get it up next week, can I still upgrade the OS I bought to 10?

Right, which is different from a clean install. The mounted virtual drive would cease to exist as soon as Windows wiped the drive.

So, I used the media creation tool to create an ISO for Windows 10, and tried to burn it to a blank DVD-R.
Windows promptly gave up and informed me that this could not be done. It's whining at me that I should check the firmware for the DVD drive, but this reeks of "standard response".

As an ISO disk image, the file is currently in Daemon Tools format, whatever that is. Could this be the problem? Or is my DVD drive shit?

Step one would be to disassociate ISO files from Daemon Tools.

In my opinion I would not put Windows 10 into “production” mode quite yet. There are some performance issues, concerns about mandatory updates and deep integration of apps that are not likely to be used by many, such as Xbox and OneDrive. The recent security breaches does not bode well for the latter. This is why I use every operating system that I can fit into my hard disk, via VMware.

I am aware that you need to install it and configure it to your requirements, and the actual upgrade is being done in stages to avoid congesting Microsoft’s update servers.

Install SmartOS on it and run a fuckton of VMs. That's what I do with my own server-thingies.

The new Terms of Service don't bode well, either. For a paid product, I'd expect Windows to be the actual product, not the user. Apparently that's too much to ask.

Also, ad-supported Solitaire? For fucking real? It's mother-fucking Solitaire. It didn't need or even want any changing from the same fucking Solitaire from Windows 3.1.

Ad-supported solitaire has been a thing since Windows 8.

But apparently I was "an oldfag" for trying to speak out about W8's sins.

Well yeah, but that Solitaire didn't ship with Windows 8 (IIRC). This one's shipping with Windows 10 (at least allegedly), which is an entirely new level of what-the-fuckery.

I'd say it's a level less, actually. Not having to navigate through the hellhole that is Windows Store to get Solitaire is a huge plus.

And I've found that ads don't even appear if you don't have an internet connection.
