Cailean arrived at the Valcourian castle. Chryssi sent him to check on her Aunt and Uncle after not hearing from them in a few days.

As Cailean disembarked from the small motor launch, as if on cue the Palace's low-level lights flicked on, illuminating parts of the structure as the sun slowly crept down.

As the man made his way up the pier and onto the pavement around the palace, a lone member of the Emperor's Guard could be seen standing silently but watching his every move.

Cailean looked the guard up and down and then pulled his saber free, spun it twice and then handed it to the guard. "I shouldn't need it." He said as he held the handle towards the guard.

The Guard barely moved, but took the sword and held it while returning to attention before turning and opening the main door for Cailean to enter the palace. As he entered, the Guard snapped a salute, closing the door behind him and allowing Cailean to ascend the great staircase.

Cailean looked at the architecture. "Nothing compared to what I've seen before." He whispered to himself.

Once the mysterious man made it to the top of the staircase, he entered under the massive dome of the palace, which was already bathed in golden light.

Except for Caliean, there didn't seem to be anyone else around at the moment, however.

Cailean's memories flashed back to his time in the Roman Empire. Watching Gladiator fights in the Colosseo. Standing amongst the masses in the newly finished Sistine Chapel. The smell of fresh paint filling his nostrils. But his memories were interrupted as he began to hear footsteps approaching.

A lone changeling slowly sauntered into view, spotting the man and hesitating for a moment. When it did not sense any evil intentions, it moved closer.
"What is your business here?" he said in a raspy, guttural voice.

Cailean's eyes flashed black for a moment, sensing the old feelings of the ones who came before the lone Changeling. Cailean put his fingers to his temples. "I'm...here to see Emperor Constantine and Empress Lacewing. Queen Chrysalis II sent me." He choked out.

The blood-red changeling glanced around, as if looking for something.
"Mother has gone back to the Hive for the day, but His Majesty is still here," it reported. "I can take you to him," it added.

Cailean nodded. "Thank you." Cailean followed the young Changeling and then something gold caught his eye. An ancient Mayan gold slab. Cailean hesitated and then his memories flashed back again. An ancient war between the Mayan and the city of Tikal.

The changeling led Cailean down one of the long hallways silently, only its hooves and his boots echoing to make any sound. It almost seemed deserted as they walked along.

After a few minutes, the changeling arrived at a door; two more changelings were standing outside it, but had been watching the approaching changeling and human with interest.
"His Majesty is in here," the first changeling said, bowing its head slightly as it backed away.

Cailean shook off the feelings of the memory and slowly stepped up to the doors to the room.

One of the other changelings, who had gone to Mutation Island the week prior, turned and knocked on the door with a hoof.
"A visitor, Your Majesty," he said in a distinctly male voice.
"Enter!" a response came from the other side, and a moment later the changeling magicked the door open and allowed Cailean through. In the middle of the room, in a high-back chair, sat the Emperor himself.

Cailean stepped inside the room and walked up to Constantine. "Connor. Chryssi was worried about you."

The Emperor said nothing at first, then wordlessly gestured for a nearby chair.
"I would appreciate it if you referred to me by my full name, Cailean," he replied tersely as the other man sat down. "Now, why is Chrysalis worried?" he asked, glancing over at the door as it swung shut from the outside.

Cailean slowly eased his ancient body down in the chair. "Forgive me. Chryssi hasn't heard much from you two in the past for days, so she became worried. However, I'm going to be staying for a few days. I was also sent to speak with you about this Empire we are building.

The Emperor stiffened slightly as Cailean brought up the multi-state empire once again, but gave nothing away from his demeanor or facial expression.
"I do hope she wasn't too worried," he replied. "It's not unusual for Lacewing and I to not hear from Chrysalis or Pupa for months at a time." He glanced over at the nearby fireplace.

Cailean nodded. "I understand." Cailean glanced uneasily back towards the hallway. "I noticed your Mayan artifacts."

"Hmm?" the Emperor glanced back towards the door, then back to Cailean. "Oh, yes. Just a few that I bought some years ago. Novelties, for the most part." He peered at Cailean, his brown eyes ignited in interest. "how did you know they were Mayan?" he asked suspiciously.

"I never did tell you much about my past lives. My first life? The day I truly born 4000 years ago? I was born to the Maya. My mother named me: Chilam Balam, after the Mayan god of protection. I was always standing for people and I gained quite a posse by the age of 15. I dreamt of being a warrior. I finished my initiation at the age of 17 and become a true warrior. Our biggest victory was when we took the city of Tikal from a neighboring tribe." Cailean said, taking off his coat and leaning back in the chair.

The Emperor sat in silence as he listened to the immortal tell his story; his face showed no trace of emotion, but inside he was surprised that this man's story began millennia before even Valcouria became a country.
"How did you end up in the changeling realms, then?" he asked nonchalantly.

I became an author about 400 years ago. Chrysalis I's Advisor contacted me. Knowing I had written the biographies of many famous figures. So I came. And here I am." Cailean said, standing and pacing as he spoke.

The Emperor again remained silent for a few moments, his gaze altering from Cailean to nothing in particular.
"What has afflicted you with this curse of immortality?" he asked finally. As he spoke, there was a knock at the door.

Cailean opened his mouth to speak, but quickly shut it and turned as her heard the knock.
