Where the fuck would Dark Vengeance cost $170? Ripoff-city.

Dark Vengeance is $100 USD. You can get it for $80 USD if you shop around.

Yeah, I'm assuming you got the relevant codices too.

Dark Vengeance includes a rulebook. But you're right, it doesn't include the codices.

Which, by the way, sucks. It doesn't even include the points cost of the models in it!

I adore the fluff to no end (currently attempting to read the entire Horus Heresy series), and the fanbase is one of the most creative and insane out there, but holy crap the prices are ridiculous.

To make matters worse, the army I'd *like* to play, were I to get into 40K, would be Imperial Guard, which is stupidly expensive (I like tanks, 'nuff said). Even if I were to go Raven Guard or Black Templars instead, the prices are just absurd. Is there a way to avoid shelling out $300 or more for a functional army?

Not really. You can save some money by buying stuff on ebay. I would also start buying from your local gaming store, if you have one, to start building up a relationship with them, so you can play games there. Just start slowly. Maybe drop $200 to $400 right off that bat at your store by buying the new Guard Codex, a rulebook (or ebay the main rulebook), and perhaps a battle force or maybe a new starter army. GW has been phasing out battle forces and replacing them with starter armies, essentially. The starter armies are a great value.

Hmm.

Perhaps by the codex and a box or two from your local store, ebay the main rulebook, or by the smaller one (30ish bucks at a store, maybe 40), and wait for the starter army from GW, if they make one.

After that just go slowly, maybe a box of guys every paycheck? Or every paycheck, or something. Space it out.

Thanks for the advice, all. :) What I'm getting is, it's inherently expensive, but take it slow and it should be fine. Of course I WOULD be interested in one of the most model-intensive armies there is. :palm:

Try to find bargains from non-GW sources, use bits strategically, use proxies, and mix models from other games. This will still not help you.

In short: not really.

Here's my list of cheap and expensive armies- I can explain it if you like. Some of this varies depending on the exact build you use, but my list should be generally valid.
Very Cheap
Dark Angels
Chaos (Crimson Slaughter/cultists)
Cheap
Space Marines (all)
Dark Eldar
Grey Knights
Orks (with careful use of bits)
Moderate
Tau
Eldar (Wraithguard/vehicles)
Chaos (other)
Expensive
Eldar (aspect warriors)
Guard (Tanks, mixed infantry)
Very Expensive
Guard (blob guard)
Don't even bother playing
Tyranids

I would like to know why you put tau where it is. and Orks are probably the easiest army to model vehicle wise.

I just assumed Tau would be about the middle price-wise, I don't know a lot about Tau. Seems like as long as you skip the particularly expensive models (stealth teams, characters, etc) and didn't go for a really odd build it would be about moderate.

For Orks, I'm assuming that you're trying to assemble an army that is tournament and GW-shop suitable (at least 50% of all models must be made of stuff that was produced by Games Workshop). You could make Ork vehicles for super cheap with no actual bits just toy trucks, scrap, and a lot of love. But those vehicles would not be suitable for use in anything official, and would basically be proxy models.

Also, Dark Eldar are cheap?!? Yes, I looked it up and it's somewhat surprising. This is due to their base troops (Kabalite squads) only being $30 (the cost of ONE guard squad) and costing up to about 110 points, and many other units being very high in terms of points cost. It is also very easy to mod Hellions into Beastmasters, and kitbash your spare bits from various kits to make your commander. Still not newbie friendly, as they rely on mobility and have the survive-ability of wet tissue paper.

And I didn't include Necrons, because I really have no idea about Necrons. I'm assuming they're worth playing, unlike Tyranids.

Tau can be cheap if you go with Farsight and crisis suits

I've been looking at Necrons because they're what I plan on starting with, they appear to be in the middle, none of the characters are over $30 though.

It is.

Thought some court had common sense and ruled that it was too much of a generic term (discounting all the times it's been used prior to GW's existence) to be copyrighted?
