I imagine that from Rowboat's perspective, his crusades are like playing Planetside 2 and Stellaris at the same time.

So I beat Dark Crusade as every faction (except Eldar, because they suck so bad that I had to ragequit when it was just me and the Necrons left and I couldn't take any of their provinces no matter what strategy I employed) and have no moved on to Soulstorm. Haven't gotten very far yet but here's my impression so far:

1. The Sisters of Battle's commander is fucking annoying.
2. The Sisters of Battle is the tackiest faction in the game.

Soulstorm as a whole is pretty much a mess, but the SoB are easily the most unfinished and half-assed aspect of it.

I've made two new discoveries about the SoB:

1. Their """power"'"" armor is shit.
2. Penitent Engines are beasts.

You are definitely right about that. Holy shit are they broken. I mean, I've gotten their mechanics down right I think but in spite of this I still seem to be struggling against the Imperial Guard.

Struggling. Against the Imperial Guard.

Even the Eldar don't struggle against the Imperial Guard, and they're the weakest faction by far. The Adeptas Sororitas aren't weak, just wonky. Their units make no sense, and their entire faction is built to rely on support which is tied through a specific resource. Said resource is not only difficult to accrue, but cannot be utilized to it's fullest potential due to unnecessary restraints on how much you can have at one time. What's worse is the entire faction seems dedicated solely to anti-infantry warfare with 80% of their units, upgrades, and structures being based around eliminating enemy infantry units. They also seem to lack diversity in the amount of units available to them compared to other factions.

They feel like a nerfed version of Space Marines, tbh.

I've always found their design questionable, but hey, you can't really get more 40K than that.

But I've never truly understood what GW actually wants to do with the SoBs. If they want to scratch them or integrate them in another faction, fine, but it makes little sense to leave them around as a sub-par, broken army relying on gimmicky mechanics. Like, GW, if you don't like the SoBs, just say it and don't cast new models for them, it would be clearer.

(My remark goes for both the Dawn of War games and the tabletop game, even though for the tabletop game things got slightly better in the pas few years and the SoBs are now kinda viable, if still horribly gimmicky).

And yeah, Soulstorm is a bloody mess as a whole, with nothing resembling balance and stupid design decisions (like the proliferation of very long-range weaponry in a game with a very zoomed-in camera...)

I find most designs in 40k to be questionable, frankly. They usually look very impractical as 40k follows the "Rule of Cool" - that is if it looks cool, then practicality doesn't matter.

Are giant pyramid-fortress-turtle-tanks with gem-lasers practical? No. Are they cool? Yes.
Are tanks the size of a building with 11 guns practical? No. Are they cool? Yes.
Are city-sized mechs with an armada's worth of firepower practical? No. Are they cool? Yes.

Well, yes, but I find that things like the Penitent Engine kinda jump the shark. Like, most Imperial equipment and designs are impractical, but they look like they can be used, at least by completely mad fascists with an unhealthy fascination with skulls and a huge tendency to overcompensation that goes back to the Emperor himself, but the Pentitent Engine doesn't belong to a battlefield. A sadomasochist convention, yeah, why not. (It doesn't help that for GW's artists the Penitent Engine seems to be mostly used as a way to get a scantily-clad woman strapped to a war machine in the tabletop game).
