Are giant pyramid-fortress-turtle-tanks with gem-lasers practical? No. Are they cool? Yes.
Are tanks the size of a building with 11 guns practical? No. Are they cool? Yes.
Are city-sized mechs with an armada's worth of firepower practical? No. Are they cool? Yes.
Well, yes, but I find that things like the Penitent Engine kinda jump the shark. Like, most Imperial equipment and designs are impractical, but they look like they can be used, at least by completely mad fascists with an unhealthy fascination with skulls and a huge tendency to overcompensation that goes back to the Emperor himself, but the Pentitent Engine doesn't belong to a battlefield. A sadomasochist convention, yeah, why not. (It doesn't help that for GW's artists the Penitent Engine seems to be mostly used as a way to get a scantily-clad woman strapped to a war machine in the tabletop game).

I've always found their design questionable, but hey, you can't really get more 40K than that.
But I've never truly understood what GW actually wants to do with the SoBs. If they want to scratch them or integrate them in another faction, fine, but it makes little sense to leave them around as a sub-par, broken army relying on gimmicky mechanics. Like, GW, if you don't like the SoBs, just say it and don't cast new models for them, it would be clearer.
(My remark goes for both the Dawn of War games and the tabletop game, even though for the tabletop game things got slightly better in the pas few years and the SoBs are now kinda viable, if still horribly gimmicky).
And yeah, Soulstorm is a bloody mess as a whole, with nothing resembling balance and stupid design decisions (like the proliferation of very long-range weaponry in a game with a very zoomed-in camera...)

I challenge this assertion. If you had it surrounded by enough triple A that could be a quite potent weapon.

They're getting a new, plastic range for the army in 2019. One model has already been revealed and earlier today they showcased all of the weapons of the Sisters of Battle and how they will look in their new renditions (spoiler: very fucking good).

My interest for GW stuff is suddenly growing.

Dark Crusade's autoresolve was a real blessing because it allowed me to just ignore attacks from weaker opponents who just wanted to spam-attack a single province that they could never take every turn they got without me having to directly fight them every time they did so, which could get tiresome. Soulstorm proceeded to fuck that up by removing it's "All or Nothing" nature, so instead of you losing nothing in victory or everything in defeat, you now lose everything in victory as well. Because God-Emperor knows I want to have to buy back all the shit I just bought for that province, garrison and buildings alike, after every fucking attack because I'm apparently supposed to expand aggressively and neglect my defenses.
Of course, my defenses don't really matter anymore it seems. I was happy to see that I could now garrison buildings, or at least early-game level ones, as it was a pretty convenient thing to have just in case you really needed it. But apparently it came with a catch: those early-game buildings are the only ones you can keep. Any other buildings you build during an enemy attack are immediately removed for the next battle, including Listening Posts and the strategic points and relics they were built on are now un-captured. You basically have to start over from scratch, because y'know, why would an army keep established defenses in place after a battle in a province? Nah, it's better to just dismantle them so you have to rebuild them in the next attack. Because that's obviously a fucking genius-level strategy.
So basically nothing matters except your Honor Guard now. Don't have a large Honor Guard? Welp, guess you're fucked. No wonder the Tau managed to conquer their entire planet so easily. This shitty new mechanic combined with their OP space cannon basically makes them a fucking unstoppable juggernaut.
Please tell me there is a mod to fix this nonsense.

"Those who reached my boundary, their seed is not; their hearts and their souls are finished forever and ever. As for those who had assembled before them on the sea, the full flame was their front before the harbour mouths, and a wall of metal upon the shore surrounded them. They were dragged, overturned, and laid low upon the beach; slain and made heaps from stern to bow of their galleys, while all their things were cast upon the water." - Ramesses III., Battle of the Delta

Which is a shame because I like the concept of entire Imperial worlds just outright surrendering and joining the Tau because living under Imperial yoke sucks so bad.

Might've been something in an old issue of White Dwarf, but not sure.
Though curious whether there has been anything about that thing that help keeps the Tau in-line also affects Humans?

The brainwashing thing? Tbh I prefer to think of it more as Imperial propaganda rather than actual fact. I like the Tau being the only faction that isn't batshit insane in a galaxy full of nothing but psychopaths. Not everything in the 40k universe needs to be Orwellian or apocalyptic.
