Maybe, but at least the other races have stronger basic units.

Ork Sluggas are strong for basic infantry, and have good melee. When reinforced to their maximum they outnumber other starter units.

Space Marines have good firepower and health, and a single maxed squad can typically hold it's own against just about any other lone, maxed starter unit.

Chaos Space Marines are basically the same as Space Marines, except they're stronger in melee than in ranged.

Necron Warriors cost nothing to produce, have good firepower, and are in general tough. They can also sometimes revive themselves, but they're also slow to produce and move. Oddly enough, their melee damage is better than their ranged damage.

Tau Fire Warriors aren't very strong and have weak melee capabilities, but they have great range and firepower to make up for that.

Eldar Guardians have decent firepower, but are weak in general unless in numbers.

Imperial Guardsmen are somehow even weaker than Guardians, and even with all upgrades, a Sergeant, grenade launchers, plasma rifles, and an attached Commissar or Priest they're still weaker than all other basic infantry units and can be mowed down easily unless in overwhelming numbers.

Well yeah numbers is their thing, numbers and raw firepower, thats how you win with them.

And ive had single squads do well against the likes of guardians on their own (but they are not meant to be going about on their own except early on really), guardsmen with grenade launchers can tear light infantry to pieces even when they dont have the numbers, give them plasma guns when facing heavy infantry and they can some times do the same thing.

Sure, if we're talking a skirmish game that would be fine. But I'm talking about campaign. I'm trying to attack a Necron province, but keep getting wiped out before I can even build up my base because I have to try and fight off two AI armies at once. My only honor guard units are a standard Guardsman and a Kasrkin, but when you're facing off against two Pariahs and Necron Lords - not to mention their regular units like Destroyers, Warriors, Flayed Ones, and Wraiths - it's not exactly easy. My max cap at start is a measly 6, making up a grand total of 3 Guardsmen not counting my honor guards who don't count toward population caps.

Therefor I have to hold off these two vastly superior armies while simultaneously building up my base so I can field a larger force. It doesn't help that said armies belong to the most overpowered race in the game, whereas I'm currently playing as the second weakest race. Considering the Necrons, Chaos, and Orks are the only races left besides me - this won't be a quick, fun, or easy campaign. Even worse, I'm fairly certain the Necrons are about to wipe out Chaos - which would mark their fourth kill of the game.

On a side note, I've already beaten the campaign as Tau, Space Marines, Orks, and Necrons - leaving just Imperial Guard (currently playing, and struggling with), Eldar, and Chaos.

Yes, but each structure has a limit and they can't be upgraded or reinforced while inside.

Welp, I couldn't take that Necron province no matter what I tried because I just couldn't stave off their constant attacks so I took a Chaos province that I couldn't take before, as the Necrons had already destroyed Chaos so now it's just me and the Eldar (not Orks, I got that mixed up as Eldar usually get wiped out in my games pretty early).

I'm basically fucked now because the Necrons control too much of the map and are too strong on their own for me. The Eldar being Eldar doesn't help, but I swear I actually gasp when ever they manage to take a fucking province because otherwise they're the first race eliminated on account of them being so pathetically weak. I might have to restart this game if I can't break the stranglehold the Necrons have, otherwise it will just be an endless stalemate (attacking the Necrons is one thing, but I happen to excel at defending my provinces so there's no way - not even with a full retinue of honor guard - they could take my provinces, and if I can't take any of there's that means nothing will change)

The Eldar, meanwhile, will keep trying to assault the same province every turn, only to lose every turn until the Necrons put them out of their pathetic misery.

Only mod I'd get for it is one that gives me General Sturnn back.

And Gabriel Angelos.

My favourite was the No Limit Mod.

There's something so damn satisfying about having 40 Basilisks laying down a constant barrage across the centre of the map while thousands of guard march from the 10 infantry commands to the enemy base in a constant stream as they spawn (through the bombardment, of course)

Or, if I wanted to get serious, 10 Russes led by 3 Baneblades.
And, of course with Vance Mother****ing Stubbs in command.

I actually love all of the Guard characters from Dawn of War. Sure Alexander isn't as manly as Brom, Sturnn, Stubbs or Castor, but they all set such a high bar that he remains pretty awesome.

Didn't like Colonel Brom tbh. He was kinda generic and didn't play as much of a role I would expect from the guy whose supposed to be in charge of an entire PDF.

Nice.

What armies does everyone play? I have a ton of armies, way too many models, really. At the moment I have Blood angels, Imperial Guard, Slaanesh Daemons, Emperor's Children, Imperial Knights, Custodes, Ad Mech, orks, and the start of genestealer cults. As far as fantasy/sigmar goes I have a small force of nighthaunts, some vampire counts and tomb kings, some empire, and some wood elves, and assorted orc and ogre stuff.

I'm selling my admech to a buddy (most of it, I'm restarting them down the line so I can paint them how I want), and I'm going to sell the marines. I can't decide what I want to keep, so I just gonna sell the lot of them. I hardly play them, and I don't really like playing with marines other than dreadnoughts and jump bros. I am also gonna sell the custodes. So I'll have a large guard army (Catachans FTW!), and fairly big ork army, and small but soon to be growing genestealer cult army, along with knights and slaanesh stuff for 40k. For fantasy/sigmar I'm selling everything except for nighthaunts.

Should make a pretty penny selling off my excess stuff!

The plan is that by the end of the year I'll have a decent start painting my orks. Gotta wait for the codex and then start slowly with boyz to get my painting groove back.

What armies do you guys and gals play?

I've not really got any 'proper' armies, other than my Daughters of Khaine - which is still relatively small at three units of Witch Elves/Sisters of Slaughter, a Cauldron of Blood, 10 Khinerai, 5 Melusai, a Lhamea, a Hag Queen, and Morathi.

I've mostly got a bunch of individual squads laying around, and a few old Vampire Count units + the new AoS starter set undead, with the Stormcast supposed to join as allies for my Daughters of Khaine.

I've 15 Skitarii laying here now + 5 Sicarians, I might turn them into a full army for 40k some time (but first I need to paint these, haha!)

Question:

So I know every Imperial Guard regiment is supposed to be based off a historical, real-world military, and in most cases it's fairly obvious what they're based off of. The one regiment I can't figure out though is the Cadian Shock Troopers. What are they supposed to be based off of, exactly? Nothing really springs to mind when I see them except maybe the Marines from Halo or the soldiers from Starship Troopers.
