Tethys 13 wrote:In honour of the Black Library 20th anniversary, what are your favourite BL novels?

I own close to 150 BL novels, but my favourite is without a doubt Scars by Chris Wraight. It took the underdeveloped and largely overlooked White Scars, owned that overlooked aspect as part of their character, and made them the most fascinating legion with the most fascinating Primarch. Plus it has some of the best lines and action scenes in the Heresy, if not BL's entire range. It was so transformative for me as a reader of BL fiction that even though I loved Path of Heaven, I still consider Scars to be the best book not because of anything Path of Heaven did wrong, but because Scars had already had that huge impact to make me go from overlooking those characters to adoring them.

I don't really have a favorite actually. I like too many of them.

Heck even when they released the plastic terminators they were still stupidly expensive.

Oh god I had almost forgotten about those. They are so old they don't even appear in catalogue 2 (IIRC 2 was the 40k one whilst 1 was fantasy but it might be the other way around).
The closest I ever saw to those in the flesh were the 1st gen space hulk minis.

In the beginning, GeeDubs created Warhammer Fantasy and Rogue Trader. Now the minis were box-shaped and ugly, and the spirit of GeeDubs was hovering over them. And GeeDubs said "Let them have wicked sweet Pauldrons of Doom", So GeeDubs gave them the pauldrons. And it was so. GeeDubs called the minis "Space Marines". And GeeDubs saw that it was good.

I have an idea for an Ork Waaagh. They would be a clan called the Ultraboyz, who would have the exact color scheme and insignia as the Ultramarines.

Reading Beast Arises again, I'm pretty sure that Waaagh! Beast would utterly annihilate almost any other invasion force in the Imperium's history, including any of the Black Crusades, the Indomitus Crusade and obviously the Tau expansions. The only things that might trouble it are some of the larger Hive Fleets and the World Engine would probably do a lot of damage before going down. Breaking down the forces, technologies, supply capabilities, tactics and dispositions, I think it would even stand a good chance against Horus's rebellion. Don't want to go into too much detail on that though, as I wouldn't want to spoil for anyone reading either book series.

I don't think the Beast and friends could beat Horus and friends. Horus had half the mechanicum, 9 space marine legions, a bunch of titan legions etc etc.

They could probably beat most other groups though.

I suppose it'd depend on the situation. If Waaagh! Beast came as a surprise out of nowhere with a unilateral attack, as it was fully capable of doing, I reckon Horus's forces would be crippled long before they started any ground war. (Major Beast Rises spoilers)
Just one fragment of Waaagh! Beast wiped out the Imperial Fist chapter fleet along with significant navy support indirectly before it'd even arrived in the system. They also vastly outclass the Mechanicum in technology and Horus's forces in supply lines (since the primary supply base, Mars, was as deep in Imperial territory as it could be) and had pretty much infinite numbers of troops, all extremely well equipped. Plus, the Prime Orks proved more than a match for Primarchs (well, one Primarch in particular at least) in single combat, and they could act in perfect concert. In comparison Horus's forces pretty much fell apart after Istvaan to do their own thing, leaving only Mortarion actually following Horus's orders for a decent stretch of the Heresy.

If both forces were prepared for each other? It'd still be a very hard fight, since Waaagh! Beast was greater than the Orks of Ullanor which required the Emperor himself alongside the Primarchs, but if Horus could get his forces organised, they'd go straight for the head and perhaps end it quickly and brutally.

How good of a shot are Grots? my copy of Rebel Winter arrived today, and it seems like "Grot snipers" have been enough of a problem for the Vostroyans to easily recognize them heck they took down 2 men in quick succession.

I imagine pretty good. Grots are cowardly little bastards even when they're in Killa Kans. I imagine being far away and still able to kill would agree with them.
