The Warhammer 40.000/Fantasy Discussion Thread Mk.II

Postby The Armed Republic of Dutch Coolness » Sun Mar 02, 2014 1:37 am

Image

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

This is a dark age, a bloody age, an age of daemons and of sorcery. It is an age of battle and death, and of the world's ending. Amidst all of the fire and fury it is a time, too, of mighty heroes, of bold deeds and great courage.

At the heart of the Old World sprawls the Empire, the largest and most powerful of the human realms. Known for its' engineers, sorcerers, traders and soldiers, it is a land of great mountains, mighty rivers, dark forests and vast cities. And from his throne in Altdorf reigns the Emperor Karl-Franz, sacred descendant of the founder of these lands, Sigmar, and wielder of his magical hammer.

But these are far from civilised times. Across the length and breadth of the Old World, from the knightly palaces of Bretonnia to the ice-bound Kislev in the far north, come the rumblings of war. In the towering World's Edge Mountains, the orc tribes are gathering for another assault. Bandits and renegades harry the wild southern lands of the Border Princes. There are rumours of rat-things, the Skaven, emerging from sewers and swamps across the land. And from the northern wildernesses there is the ever-present threat of Chaos, of daemons and beastmen corrupted by the foul powers of the Dark Gods. As the time of battle draws ever near, the Empire needs heroes like never before.

Ah, starting 40K, coolio!
I'd decide on what army you'd like to start, first. If Dark Angels or Chaos Space Marines, buy Dark Vengeance.
Otherwise it'd be best to start with the main rulebook, your army's codex, and a battleforce. If you just want to paint and collect, buy the miniatures you lik best.

Wel, I've got the Rulebook on my computer and am going to start collecting Necrons for the looks and because I like the way they work.

Wel, I've got the Rulebook on my computer and am going to start collecting Necrons for the looks and because I like the way they work.

The next step would be Codex: Necrons, then. You should also look at how you want your army to be on the tabletop; a representation of a force as described in the background, or something super-competetive.

For Necrons, you can never go wrong by buying Necron Warriors as these will probably be the mainstay of your army. Mind the glowing bits from their guns, though - don't put them on the model after painting the rest of the miniature! Necron Warriors are one of the two troop choices of the Necron army, and you need two units of the "Troop" class in your army at the very least.
The other Necron troop choice is the Necron Immortal unit. These are tougher than Warriors (and more expensive, both money and points wise!). The kit can also make a so called "elite" unit; Necron Deathmarks (which are the image displayed once you follow the link). The kit is a bit tougher to assemble than the Warrior kit from what I've heard, though.
To make your army legal, you also need someone leading it; in the case of the Necrons, either a special character, or an Overlord. I for one would pick this kit, as you can make an Overlord on his own little transport on it - it's a really nice kit. The best thing is, however, that if you make the Annihilation Barge from it, you can still make a Necron Overlord, as a base is included to put him on. That way you actually get two units - hooray. Other options to lead your army are this Overlord, Imotekh the Stormlord, Trazyn the Infinite, Nemesor Zahndrek, or Zahndrek's loyal bodyguard Vargard Obyron, Orikan the Diviner, and Anrakyr the Traveller. Plenty of choices as to who will lead your army for Necrons! The Necrons have got quite a nice choice of units available for them nowadays :D

If you want to play the game at a store or something, you will also need the Necron Codex and the Main Rulebook on paper - so mind that.

You'll also need to decide on a painting scheme, and pick the colors you'd like, along with some brushes. The Standard Brush is your best bet from GW's brushes. You should also decide on how to base your models - I, for one, find basing a terrible thing to do, so I use GW's "texture paints" - you just paint them onto the base of your models, and voila. You will also need glue to assemble your miniatures - always go with Super Glue.

Wait, they're thinking of releasing a new edition of 40K?

When was the last one released?

I didn't think it was that long ago.
The above post may or may not be serious.

Well, the 'Nids got updated pretty recently to 6th. That's the most recent I think.

New edition of 40K, not the latest codex.

Just about two years.

Can't find head or tails in the rumours, though. Some say it's just a new starter set, some that it's 6.5 with parts of Escalation and Strongpoint added, some that it's completely new edition.

Whatever the truth, releasing a new edition this soon smacks of desperation, if you ask me.

Yeah, basically.

A quick look at Lexicanum seems to suggest a new edition every four to five years, with four years between each of the more recent editions - 3rd (1998), 4th (2004), 5th (2008), 6th (2012).

So ive noticed that Fantasy battle does not seem to be anywhere near as popular as 40K, do i was wondering for those who do play it or have an interest in it what is your preferred race?

Ive always been a fan of fantasy orcs and the Empire. Ive got an orc army around here somewhere that i collected and painted a few years ago, though never played a game with them.

Empire and Vampire Counts.

Indeed, I've recently made the decision to combine the two, making a Vampire Counts army which includes converted Empire wizards as Necromancers, an Empire Captain as a vampire, a Grave Guard unit made out of Great Swords. My zombies will have a scattering of Empire bits and pieces through them.

The only thing that is irritating me right now is my Black Knights. The models are excellent, but they don't really fit in with the direction I've decided to take my army in - they were the first models I bought for this army. I'm either going to re-do them as Hexwraiths or buy myself some Empire knights and convert them.

Also, the French name for Hexwraiths is so much better than the British one.

Yeah my brother was a huge fan of the Skaven, he had a massive army of them years ago when he worked at GW. I never got into them though.

I never got into the vampire counts either, though some of the models are pretty cool looking. Man Conversion gives you so many possibilities doesn't it?

Yep - it's probably my favourite aspect of the hobby.

I might also be an secret solvent addict due to the years of smelling all that poly cement.

Three tiered "40k" match:
First tier:Epic Armageddon
Second tier:Warhammer 40K
Third tier: Inquisitor.
First tier would play like any game of Epic, except Assaults would be resolved at second tier as match of Warhammer 40k with suitable models; and they would roll out like any game of 40k, except that assaults/close combat would be resolved as game of inquisitor with suitable models and stats.
Y/N?
