I love how I can run to the basement, grab the box for Mob Rule, pop the disk in, install it, and play it with no problems, and its a a game from 1999! :p

I still regularly play through Enchanter again and that game is from 1983.

You know what I would do if money were no object?

I would start a studio that would make games exclusively for the PC (Both Windows and Linux, of course, but no Macs). Games that wouldn't be standardized or McDonaldized and take full advantage of the PC platform. A game that wouldn't compromise and harken back to the days when games were complex and required thought.

Since we would be able to focus all resources on making the game for PC, we would support all the PC technologies under the sun: Eyefinity, Surround, Gsync, FreeSync, TrueAudio, Oculus Rift, Razer Hydra, PhysX, 3D Vision, HD3D, hUMA, HSA, Hyperthreading, and the rest that I have missed. I would even have the game ship with support for all three APIs: DirectX, OpenGL, and Mantle.

My first game would probably be an open-world RPG done right, with large cities, reactive world, plenty of choices, and complex roleplaying with situations like in Morrwoind where one would have to levitate in order to talk to the wizards: Set in a fictionalized fantasy Africa, like Guild Wars: Nightfall.

If money were no object I'd hire programmers to make the game for me while I do the story bits.

My first project would be this (and yes I've put some thought into this):

It'd be based off of Final Fantasy I. In fact, much of the code for FFI would be present. But here's the catch: the graphics would be done away with. It would have a textual front-end, so you can't see what's going on. Of course, the game engine itself would remain untouched, so anything possible in FFI would be possible in this hypothetical, but the graphical sections would not be available. At all.

That'll never happen, of course, but it'd be one of the most interesting games for sure.

So what if the article was posted two days ago?

I don't think that constitutes as a week. :)

The article isn't new news. It was posted on Reddit like a week ago, and ended up here that day.

So like, how every person who trots that whole "Man, remeber back in XXXX, Y was like so much better than the Y's of today!" says their game is going to be.

You know, there is probably a reason people don't do this at the minute. Aside form development costs, it would likely end up being such a big demanding game, you would have eliminated most of the PC market.

Sounds cool, except you would be all lame with your 'Boo, I hate completely optional, non-enforced fast travel waaa'

Actually, implementing all these features would not impact system requirements. If anything, it would increase the availability of the game if people can use hUMA, HSA, Mantle, and Hyperthreading to increase performance and such. The more flexibility in terms of software in the game itself means more flexibility for the hardware of the end-user.

I would consider the possibility of having specific instances of fast travel like the horse carts of Skyrim. For me, fast travel breaks immersion; I don't like being reminded that I am not my character by instantly teleporting somewhere unless I was teleported by some sort of spell in game. Fast travel also limits the amount of time that I am in an environment. I feel that I don't get to see everything if I just fast travel back and forth.

That being said, in my game I would have the open world to be a lot more lively and filled with more NPCs so as to make travelling through the countryside more interesting.

If a gamer would want fast travel in my game, they could just mod it in.

Sounds like you wouldn't make very much money, which I guess doesn't matter if money were no object (but then that isn't a reality for anyone).

An easy way to fix this would be to have a "fast travel on/off" option either in a separate option menu or as a difficulty option when starting a new game. That way you don't have to acknowledge it's existence whilst playing, but those who cba running everywhere can have it.

You mean the way games like Skyrim already have a fast travel on off system.

It's when you don't click on the fast travel option.

So... Table-top RPGs...

Would anybody be interested in playing them online? :/

And, on another, matter, I've been looking for wrestling RPGs. I know all about Know Your Role!, but I've heard of another one called The WWF Basic RPG. I've yet to find that one in a store. Has anybody heard or seen that one?
