So recently Bandcamp had a nice deal for bands due to this whole corona thing, and I decided it was a good time to pick up some music (Albeit most I could only get digital and not physical, but that's okay)

Jesu by Jesu
My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go by Aereogramme
Into the Void by Abstract Void
A Long Time Listening by Agent Fresco
Go by Jonsi
Old Mornings Dawn by Summoning
Futha by Heilung
Currents by Tame Impala

Thinking of getting Alternate 4 by Anathema and Viva Emptiness by Katatonia as well.

That would make it the Eurasiavision, which means a dramatic increase of the number of countries participating.

Well Australia is joining Eurovision anyway, so what's the problem with having the contest with a few other countries that actually share the same landmass as most European countries? (part sarcastic)

It's pretty damn great imo.

But Rush's true epic-length masterpiece is the Cygnus X-1 Suite. If you sit down and listen to this and it doesn't blow your mind, I'll devour my shoe.

"Echoes" by Pink Floyd beats that at almost 24 minutes.

Its funny to me that long songs are surprising to some people, with the fact I've probably listened to hundreds of songs by now that are over 10 minutes long.

Yeah, there's some genres that just naturally lend themselves to long songs. Like "Lizard" by kc is 23:20, and Pink Floyd actually has another song that's over 24 minutes in length (and one that 17 minutes, and one that's technically 27 minutes but is split into two parts on the record...they liked long songs). Tool has one that breaks the 24 minute mark. "Octovarium" by Dream Theater is exactly 24 minutes.

Really anything on the same side of the moon as prog ends up with 24 minute songs. Idk why it's a rule, but it is.

Younger (under 25) people I talk to often seem surprised that I listen to 5-minute songs as they think anything over 3:30 is overly long. Come on now; it isn't the 60s all over again!

Long songs can be awesome but daunting.
I actually like the trend of music especially hip hop today becoming shorter and shorter. It's compact, concise, and jam packed with interesting sounds, melodies, flows. But some of the best of the early Beatles especially were short and beautiful. I'm not comparing the two minute four bar loop soundcloud rapper, but there are artists out there making some crazy stuff that's two minutes long. It grabs your attention immediately and the upbeat and fast nature fits a lot of moods.

Yeah I think the Beatles really mastered the art of one-trick-pony songs, that have a good riff and interesting structure but just show you the structure and move on.

Of course too many songs since have not had a good riff or interesting structure and still remain short, thus becoming uninteresting fully.

I think the only band since that has actually mastered the one-trick-pony song style is the White Stripes.

edit:

I mean one of my favorite Black Sabbath songs is literally 28 seconds in duration.
I'm also a big fan of an AWOLNATION song that is slightly longer, at 31 seconds.

That's what happens when you're someone who has been living on corporate spewed pop music. They certainly appreciate their appreciation for the completely uncreative, short music!

Oh, no doubt all of it can be good. The songs length doesn't matter to me as long as its good.

This is one of my favorite songs on the Half Life Soundtrack and its only 43 seconds.

Edit: This is a favorite off of The Last of Us soundtrack, and its 1:42

Some of my favorite tracks are ridiculously long and awesome, like Kraftwerk - Autobahn, Orbital - Impact, and C418 - Thunderbird. I've even listened to a track that's 38 minutes long and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Short songs can be really good too though. Just as long as they do something really cool in those 2 minutes.

Also Corrian, I see you're on RYM as well - I've been on there for about three months myself. I've been working on a track-by-track description of my hypothetical dream album for the past several months and would like some general feedback. It's still nowhere near complete, though I have written about a few songs as of this writing. I'm not looking for recommendations of specific music, just some input on my ideas so far.

So there's some new Gorillaz. It sounds more like their older stuff, which is interesting seeing as they were going much more synth-pop in recent stuff. This one sounds like an old new wave song, there's basically a punk song, and then one that's more inbetween.
