New Animal Collective. It feels like a better version of their last album honestly (Which was pretty meh)

Nice to see a band of such fame being so courageous and stepping out of their comfort zone.

Obviously you're wrong in that case
I mean, for example: this is Metallica's biggest radio hit, even though this is among their heaviest songs. And both of them are from the same album. I'm pretty sure same goes for Linkin Park and other metal/rock bands as well, at least in the mainstream radio.

Yeah, I usually find that a lot of rock bands' heavier stuff is less well known. eg. The Beatles' most well known hits are typically more poppy, but they also have heavier songs like I Want You (She's So Heavy), Yer Blues, and Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey, but these aren't as well known.

Linkin Park were at their heaviest when they pulled out a down-tuned nu metal riff and screamed the same line over it over and over One Step Closer, A Place For My Head, etc... Not really heavy so much as angry and intense.

For me that song feels very heavy in a way. Not in the brutal death metal way but you know.
I recognize a huge difference between ''dark'', the opposite of ''happy/optimistic'', and ''heavy'' as an opposite of ''calm''. And it's usually the ''heavy'' that I can't find much of. When I do, it's usually in the form of too much distortion.
And that Metallica song, to me it sounds like something they could play on the radio anyway (especially because of the low tempo). Not exactly sure why they focus on the ballads instead.

Fight Fire With Fire is really good. I really like how rhythmic the guitar(s) are/is.

My favorite Beatles song is Helter Skelter which is considered a proto-heavy metal song by some people. Basically their "heaviest" song anyways.

For me heavy isn't as much an opposite for calm, instead it's more of an opposite for intense. Think of it as a difference between "energetic and upbeat" and "carrying five thousand tons of steel while trying to dance". Or something along those lines. Where energetic is light and easy to dance along.

I can't imagine carrying anything while trying to dance... but to be honest I'm not into dancing at all.
