On a sidenote, I've started listening to meme songs unironically. Help.

What are "meme songs"? It's not like artists make music with the purpose of getting it used in some stupid online video.

Songs that are primarily used in memes. Song for Denise, Yi Jian Mei, and Never Gonna Give You Up have been on repeat in my playlists for a while.

Was the one you heard called How You Remind Me? In my opinion, that one isn't too bad.

Yeah I think that was it

I'd argue that something doesn't need to be technical to be good (e.g. I'd rather listen Minor Threat than Yngwie Malmsteen, for example) but you hit the nail on the head with the last sentence. It feels way too commercialised and similar to other bands around the time.

I reckon a reason why a lot of people like them is down to nostalgia, which is a decent enough reason.

Oh I get that. I respect the hell out Yngwie but I'd never voluntarily listen to any of his work because "shreddy shreddy tech shred shred" is just as boring as bland DABG commercial shit (Looking at you too, Dream Theater). But I'd also argue that you need some technical proficiency and knowledge of theory and composition to make unique and memorable music. I'm not saying you need a masters degree in composition to be good musicians, but you gotta know how to stand out from the crowd (ex: Led Zeppelin, Tool, Tame Impala, Mastodon, Dave Matthews, etc)

I just need someone to explain to me why they (apparently) suck.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of it comes from the fact that lead singer Chad Kroeger is widely perceived to be a complete douche, and people can't separate the art from the artist.

While I'm by no means a Nickelback fan, I don't mind "How You Remind Me" (2001) either.

I mean How You Remind Me really isn't that bad, and the hate is over dramatic. But I do think a lot of their stuff is pretty trash. Rockstar is an awful song.

Because some people find the post-grunge subgenre to be a plotting, slow, dull, slog full of cringey breakup angsty lyrics, terrible vocals, and overwrought production.

Indeed. It's overly-commercial, generic, boring DABG hodgepodge meant to be just edgy enough for teens to like it but not so far out that can't be played on the radio. It's basically slowed down pop-punk.

New bass on order! Hopefully it'll get here next week but with COVID and shipping disruptions it could take up to 2 weeks.

I'm gonna start working on solidifying some album ratings I think. Just upp'd Angel Dust by Faith No More to a 10/10. There really are no flaws to this album honestly. Probably get some Top Albums of the Year for various years going.

His verse on the song for that flick is unsurprisingly total fire.
