Yeah, I was fitting resources into strategic value. But yeah, basically.

Yeah, because he didn't want legionnaires in his city imposing martial law, and possibly because he didn't want a heavier imperial presence squashing out the unofficial Talos worship going on.

I think Balgruuf was the most reasonable Jarl. Most of the Imperial Jarls (barring Maven Blackbriar.) are reasonable.

There's a lot of things to like and dislike about Ulfric, but some of his actions can be detestable. When there's a Dragon Crisis, and the Dovahkiin has a meeting on High Hrothgar, he uses it as a means of gaining more land. Also, him using the Shout on Torygg was unfair.

Both the Imperials and Stormcloaks have their assholes though. The Imperials have Maven Blackbriar, who almost convinced me to defect to the Stormcloaks. The Stormcloaks have the Silver-Blood family, which convinced me to re-defect to the Imperials.

Unofficial ruling family of Markath, like the Black-Briars in Riften. They make the city's prisoners work in the silver mine they own and had the king of the Forsworn spared from execution so they could use him and his soldiers to kill troublemakers and their enemies.

It's funny how, even though I fought for the empire, I probably did more damage to it than the Stormcloaks could have by killing the Emperor in Hail Sithis!. Oops.

I enjoyed finishing that quest with the Forsworn. Turns out the Silver-Blood don't live up to their surname. :p

Maybe I'm being racist, but the Thalmor reminded me of WW2 Japan. "Elvish Unity" reminds me a whole lot of the "East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere."

Oh yeah, I actually made a similar connection. However, the Empire, if I'm not wrong, claimed something similar regarding Men.

They are more like Nazi Germany, with their genocidal conquest of kingdoms, focus on Elvish "purity" and eugenics, and overall sense of arrogance and supremacy.

That was WW2 Japan wrapped up in a nutshell. The authors of the Co-Prosperity Sphere claimed that it's goals were to create a free East Asia, unexploited by the Colonial Powers of the West. In reality this meant Japan mass enslaving large portions of East Asia.

The Thalmor want Elvish Unity against man, but they still mistreat other Non-Altmer elves (if I remember correctly.) and view them as inferior.

Nah. At least, not from what I've seen in the game. They're based on the Roman Empire (made even more blatant in Skyrim, going from a wink*wink-nudge*nudge to "Get it, get it? They're based on Romans!") and essentially don't care what race you are. As long as you fight for the Empire.

In Oblivion you need a Daedric artifact to complete the main quest.
