Things with non-descriptive or misleading titles

Postby Goias » Tue Dec 08, 2009 3:14 am

I just came up with this idea randomly while being on a break during school, so this might not seem like such a good idea. Oh well.

Do you know any band, movie, book or TV series whose title or name does not accurately describe what it actually looks/sounds like? Or whose title led you to think that it would be something and when you actually tried it, it turned out to be completely different?

As an example in case my explanation wasn't clear enough: when I first heard of "The Bay City Rollers", I thought that was a pretty good name for a rock band and thought that I'd get some nice ol' bluesy hard rock. Then I tried a song and it turned out they were a lame teenybopper pop band from the seventies.
Just repeat to yourself, "it's just a show, I should really just relax"

The perfect example of this (although a positive reversal) is the film The Princess Bride.

As a fairly blokey film fan I have generally assume that any film with either "Princess" OR "Bride" in the title is going to be some sort of horrible factory line overly sentimental rom-com, probably starring some berk like Matthew McConnachy. Therefore a film with BOTH in the title should surely be truly awful.

Instead it was actually a very witty, satirical, rip roaring fantasy adventure starring Andre the Giant. Inconceivable!

I didn't say it was necessary that the thing turn out to be worse than imagined. I just didn't have another example. :)

Movie-wise, the House of the Dead turned out to be about an entire Island rather than just a house.

Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. nothing to do with the FF games. NADA!
Alone in the Dark: again, nothing to do with the game it was based off of.
Bloodrayne: I curse the Uwe Boll!

Terminator: Salvation - what exactly was being saved in this movie?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Love the movie and I understand the title is from a poem, but as an outsider who has never read said poem, it's not very descriptive of the movie

I have a friend who still won't watch that movie despite assurances that it is good from all our other friends and the fact that when we quote it, he enjoys those quotes. Then again, he also won't eat anything green - even if it's just food coloring.

That's debatable. :-p But given the focus on Marcus Wright and John Connor as saviors, it probably should have been retitled to "Savior" rather than "Salvation".

Any of the James Bond movies really.

actually... the funny thing is...

Square put out Final Fantasy because it was planned to be the last game Squaresoft put out. but the game sold so well it saved the company from closing. that's why Final Fantasy became their "child" to nurture and grow.

The Watchmen aren't actually watchmen.

Likewise, Guillemots aren't actually birds. They're an indie group from England.

I was dubious about being dragged to see Perfume, until I heard it's subtitle was 'Story of a serial killer'
And that the main character was a crippled sociopath

Let's see.
bands:
Led Zeppelin-they're not actually hydrogen-filled balloons, the membrane of which is either a toxic metal or Light-Emitting Diodes.

Yard Birds-they look a little too human to be any kind of birds, let alone birds found in a yard.

games:

Final Fantasy- Like someone said, there's nothing final about them. This is a franchise that rivals Mario spin-offs and Megaman in terms of sequalitis.

Metroid- Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Where's Zelda? Why is Zelda in the title if she's not in the game. And if she's not even mentioned in the game, why is it a legend of her? Shouldn't it be Legend of Link?

Pole Position- Don't let the name fool you. This is a racing game, not a game about strippers and their pole.

shows/manga/whatever:
Dragon Ball- imagine my relief when I learned that the show contained no actual dragon testicles. Though, considering Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if the unedited Japanese version had dragon "balls". Also, tentacle rape. It is Japan, Canada of the eastern hemisphere, afterall.
