My headcanon has been that the Equestrian military was only ceremonial, with their duties only being to protect the princesses and the Royal Castle.

Yeah, the whole thing was created during Celestia and Luna's simultaneous "Conceited Valley Girl" phase, and no one's gotten around to bumping up the requirements yet.
