Well a standing military wouldn't work in Equestria since aside from Shining Armor and Flash Sentry, we haven't really seen many ponies who special talents are applicable to the military. Hel, even Shining Armor's seem to be strong in defensive spells, not offensive ones.

It's just temporary conscript, the conscripted ponies aren't professional soldiers. That's how armies worked in the medieval Europe. Shining Armor and Flash Sentry are knights or commanding officers that know military and they lead armed peasants. After the war ends, the conscripts are released and they return to their regular jobs.

Honestly, I think the only military forces Equestria has is the Royal Guards and the Night Guards, other than that it's pretty much just regular pony folks. I'm more inclined to think of The Wonderbolts as a civilian version of the Blue Angels.

Intervened in Uniform which either means they took the time to get dressed in a society that got naked, most likely due to force of habit, or just happened to be passing by in those uniforms. As the latter seems more improbable I go with the former, and the only reason I can think they would bother to take another 30 seconds to get into useless uniforms to engage a dragon is out of military discipline. Also note that just because their military doesn't mean their competent.

I've decided that Earth Ponies have prehensile tails/hair, by the way. We've not really seen pegasi or unicorns use their tails the same way. Dash uses her tail a little bit but it's very basic.

Applejack, Applebloom, Pinkie Pie, have all displayed fine control of their tails to the tip.

I can accept this headcanon.

Just because I don't know how many here have or have not watched that clip I'll need to spoiler my reaction.

I wonder, depending on how deeply Spitfire is involved in this, her position in the Wonderbolts might be put under review, or even get her court martialed (at least if it wasn't such a saccharine world anyway). Trying to get an athlete to defect quite possibly by exploiting your rank, position, and experiences does not strike me as sound. Heck depending on how the episode goes I might actually do a fic on the would be review and/or court martial.

I doubt it, that sort of thing is common, no? Athletes go to whichever team offers the best deal, either in terms of prestige or money or training or whatever. I really hope that she chooses the cloudsdale team. Anything else would just be stupid.

Due to its Schizo tech nature, Equestria wouldn't have a standing modern military, they'd just have castle guards. However, they could conscript peasant ponies in times of war, but that doesn't seem to happen.
