As an additional thought, would the fact that cutie marks are unique mean that in the long run, ponies as a whole have no weaknesses? If everypony is talented at something, but no two ponies have the exact same talent, and ponies can just keep multiplying as each generation passes, does that mean that there is nothing ponies can't do at some point or another?

EDIT: Though, I suppose cutie marks being unique is a weakness in and of itself...

Maybe when someone gets their cutie mark for something someone else already has, whoever got it first dies. It would kind of explain why we've only seen a couple elderly ponies.

You're thinking too hard, Ceffy.

Nonsense. One cannot simply think too hard.

Cutie marks repeat all the time.

Yeah, but those are just the images. It's not impossible that the same symbol can be used for multiple talents.

I think there are some talents that are needed in every town. Like mechanic, bakery, farmer, etc. They repeat, but in different towns.

The story of the Windigoes. The actual ones, though... well, stories need some kind of inspiration, and it's not like Equestria has any shortage of mythical monsters.

Well, Windigos are spirits of greed in Native American myth. As such, actions, objects and thoughts of greed attract them.

Remember, the three tribes weren't just arguing, they were arguing over land. As in, who was going to get all of it, leaving little or none for the rest, no sharing involved. While I'm skeptical the actual Native American Windigos were involved, that scenario could have attracted them.

Isn't that a cute little thought? :)

Thank you.

Also, Native American Windigos were also associated with the cold.

Basically, the FiM team likely did their research on Windigos to craft these more kid-friendly versions.

Fun fact: Celestia sending Luna to the Moon after being overcome by jealousy is only partly true. The storytellers all leave out that it was actually Starswirl who banished Luna after she flew into a rage and kicked Celestia down the stairs.

Not entirely.

Wikipedia wrote:The wendigo is part of the traditional belief systems of various Algonquian-speaking tribes in the northern United States and Canada, most notably the Ojibwe and Saulteaux, the Cree, the Naskapi, and the Innu people.[5] Although descriptions varied somewhat, common to all these cultures was the conception of wendigos as malevolent, cannibalistic, supernatural beings (manitous) of great spiritual power.[6] They were strongly associated with the winter, the north, and coldness, as well as with famine and starvation.[7] Basil Johnston, an Ojibwe teacher and scholar from Ontario, gives one description of how wendigos were viewed:[8]

.....

At the same time, wendigos were embodiments of gluttony, greed, and excess: never satisfied after killing and consuming one person, they were constantly searching for new victims. In some traditions, humans who became overpowered by greed could turn into wendigos; the wendigo myth thus served as a method of encouraging cooperation and moderation.[9]
Among the Ojibwe, Eastern Cree, Westmain Swampy Cree, Naskapi, and Innu, wendigos were said to be giants, many times larger than human beings (a characteristic absent from the wendigo myth in the other Algonquian cultures).[10] Whenever a wendigo ate another person, it would grow in proportion to the meal it had just eaten, so that it could never be full.[11] Therefore, wendigos were portrayed as simultaneously gluttonous and emaciated from starvation.

I said mostly, not entirely. Although, if you think about it both interpretations can make sense. It's unlikely that a civilization would only send two people to find a new home for them, especially when one of those two people is one of the leaders of the civilization and you're on the brink of war. And you certainly send out more than one party. It could be that a couple of expeditions found Equestria in the autumn and were stranded there during the winter. As supplies dwindled, the three groups turned on each other—as a result of past tensions and an ongoing argument about who found what first, fulfilling the greed aspect—and once the fighting died down, used the bodies to keep themselves alive until spring.
