Okay, just watched it. I have very, very little experience of canon (ethics prevent me from watching it online), and I was surprised by how good it was. Couple of points:

I liked how far Silver and Diamond went in their taunting, into actual cruelty rather than generic non-threatening bullies that aren't allowed to disturb.
Is Ponyville really the only place that has all three pony types working together? It doesn't seem very original, though I'll let that slide on Rule of Awesome.
Following on from that, just how successful did the CMC think that doing a routine based on diversity without any diversity was going to be? I acknowledge that they're young and short-sighted, but surely they must know that their act was doomed without Scootaloo.

Yup. I've said before that I appreciate the EU that the fans build around canon (not just MLP) as much as and indeed more than the canon itself.

Getting their cutie marks will take them in a new direction; considering that the original CMC episode formula has been done over and over, but this episode was a little bit different.

Scheduling. Episodes of TV series are frequently filmed (voiced in this case) out of order, so having to record three VAs in order can really screw things up, not to mention the VAs not being able to control when their voices peak or ebb. It also means that they can't re-record anything after their voices have broken completely.
