If "Apple" were the Apple Family's family name, you'd wind up with names like "Applejack Apple", "Apple Bloom Apple", "Apple Strudel Apple", and other such names which are unbearably repetitious for the names of an entire extended family. I've mentioned it before, but one fic I read gave ponies surnames, and the Flim Flam brothers were called that because that's their surname. Flim Flam. As in, Flim Flim Flam and Flam Flim Flam.
