Comics VS Manga

Postby Saint Francis » Tue Oct 22, 2013 3:01 am

The title says it all. What do you prefer? Manga (japanese, chinese or korean) or Comics (US and European mainly?). I read them both, I read both Italian comics (Dylan Dog, Nathan Never, etc.) and Manga (Battle Royale, Mirai Nikki, The Drifting Classroom, etc.) However, I must say I prefer a little bit more comics, but not for simple matters of origin, but rather of content. As in the category of manga there are many titles available, the vast majority of them have only one copy of itself. And so happen to also have 100 titles that speak of the same story only with different characters (for example, mecha, or love stories in class)Despite being repetitive even the comics, I think that at least differ in the plots. The Bonelli Editore, the manufacturer of Tex, Dylan Dog, etc., has never made a copy of one of his comics. And honestly, I've never seen Japanese graphic novel. However, there are only my opinion. What do YOU prefer? Comics or Manga?

I read both altough I tend to read manga more, partly because it's cheaper, and partly because I'm interested in Japan and it's culture more than say, USA. Also, manga is only japanese, korean ones are called manhwa. Don't know about chinese comics.

If the story is okay and the writing is somewhat decent, I will give it a try.

I used to favor comics when I was a kid, but pretty much gave up on it for a long while after the numerous retcons that just kept happening with either Marvel or DC. Tried out manga and was entertained for some time, until I got tired of certain genres for a number of reasons. Now, I just pick up whatever is good.

Chinese ones are called manhua, and Hong Kong ones manwa. Unsurprisingly, they all derived from the same Sinitic words (漫畫). Despite that, personally I think Hong Kong manwa is more similar to the Eurosphere comics because of its format (thinner, fully coloured most of the time) and its preferred topic (superheroes, or "normal people" that might as well be superheroes). Chinese manhua features both side of the things, though, if only because its indigenous comic industry (at least one that we would consider comic/manga) is still in its infancy and thus imports heavily from both Japan and Hong Kong.

Superheroes are more of an american thing though, european comics tend to not feature them.

I reject whole concept of separation of manga and comics. Manga in West should be called comics, despite what japanophiles/weeaboos/otakus/etc want to object. :P

Very true indeed. However, seeing the number of royals in existence, I doubt this is the case here.

I mostly read webcomics these days, but I have been a fan of some Japanese, Korean, and British comics. (Plus Tintin and Asterix)

Not really a fan of American mainstream comics (DC/Marvel/Superheros and the "Funny Books"), but there's a few obscure or arty comics I'll read.

I just got into comics (mainly DC) because of another forum i frequent, however, i dont pick up and read any actual comics from the store, I've only read a few scans online, (1970ish Deadpool, a WW2 era Justice League comic, a recent Shazam comic) but I enjoy it.
As for manga, I've read several, and I have enjoyed most of them (Bo-BoBo-Bo-BoBoBo, Pokemon, Naruto, One-Piece, 666 Satan)

Manga denotes the country of origination (in this case, Japan) of a category of comics. Manga itself has got plenty of genres and sub-genres.

I started reading the MLP comics and realized I love comics.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

I usually read both comics and manga in book form if possible because I like that way of reading more, but it does have the unfortunate effect of limiting my reading opportunities due to the price of the books.

So they're Japanese comics. Ergo, comics.

I like comics. I have not read enough manga to judge it really. As a general rule I find anime incredibly irritating though so I am not interested in going out of my way to read manga.
Eco-Friendly Green Cyborg Santa Claus

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.
