In our world, that would be depressing. In theirs, a career charring chunks of muscle from the bodies of fellow ungulates, that others may consume this flesh to gain precious branched amino acids, would either be horrifying or awesome or both.

It'd be awesome, why else would they have cattle in pigs?

...you know, we've seen the cows and sheep talk. We haven't seen goats talk, but we've seen them wear neckties and assist minotaurs...somehow.

We've never seen pigs talk or do anything productive. And unlike cows and sheep, pigs don't have a whole lot of other uses.

...I don't think Sweet Apple Acres makes all of its income from apples and apple products.

Obviously not didn't you see what Discord did to their corn rows?

On a more serious note I suspect their is some market for chicken and fish meat as well as pig. Heck ponies themselves use the eggs.

There might be a market, but I don't think there's one in Ponyville. Maybe Canterlot or Manehattan...somewhere that a pony could sneak anonymously into a shop to buy pornography and fried chicken.

...actually, that's not a bad idea. Get all of your breasts in one place.

So, based on the facts that gems are ridiculously common and yet somehow extremely valuable, I've come to the conclusion that only Equestria has massive amounts of them. Exports are heavily restricted by the government, but smuggling is common and lucrative.

Keep in mind that dragons hoard and eat gems as well, and at least two (not counting Spike) made their homes in Equestria in Season 1 alone. Gems might be more common there than in our world, but they would also be consumed at a much, much greater rate.

But even with the increased consumption, they're still far more common than they are here.

...do we know that they're extremely valuable though? The CMC bought that industrial dryer with one, but in the very same episode, Spike paid for fairly minor goods and services with much larger ones...and I can't think of any other case where the average gem was shown to have high value. Maybe that pet-dryer was just unusually cheap.

Then again, Equestria is sort of schizophrenic when it comes to the monetary value of things.

That's where the black market thing comes in. Inside Equestria, they're not worth much because they're so common. If you know a good smuggler, though, and they don't want to bother getting the gems themselves, they're worth a fair bit.

They fail at everything they do though. If they'd tried that, at least one of them would be frozen in carbonite in Jabba's palace.

Do they really fail at everything? I mean, there's gotta be something they succeeded at but gave up on because they didn't get their mark....

That or the meat is salted (or fridged, can't remember if I've seen a fridge in Equestria or not) and shipped to griffon lands. (which are apparently across the ocean that borders Eastern Equestria based on the one official map. Or shipped to other places with Griffon communities.

That or like real life different gems have different values, that small red one might have been a particularly rare one as compared to the other gems used. However the fact that gems are also not overly ludicrous to see in school plays (remember how Rarity got her mark) gems themselves are common most likely, at least in Equestria, with some exceptions to particular kinds.

Maybe it's the diamond dogs driving up prices. We never did figure out what they do with their gems.

I hear tell that the size of the gem does not necessarily impact the value of it, some of the value come from how well it's "cut". If my brief browsing of gem value is anything to go by. I could be wrong though, I'm not really knowledgeable on gem value.

I think Equestria is a breadbasket nation.
We've seen that earthponies possess the power to grow food either better (Or perhaps even grow it at ALL).
Not to mention the large amount of gems and vegetarian nature of the populace.

I'd be willing to bet meat is an export to the griffins for instance, and gems to dragons.
It'd certainly explain the lack of international tension. Noone wants to bite the hand that feeds.
