It'd be awesome, why else would they have cattle in pigs?
Goodnight Everypony

We've never seen pigs talk or do anything productive. And unlike cows and sheep, pigs don't have a whole lot of other uses.

Obviously not didn't you see what Discord did to their corn rows?
On a more serious note I suspect their is some market for chicken and fish meat as well as pig. Heck ponies themselves use the eggs.

Keep in mind that dragons hoard and eat gems as well, and at least two (not counting Spike) made their homes in Equestria in Season 1 alone. Gems might be more common there than in our world, but they would also be consumed at a much, much greater rate.

But even with the increased consumption, they're still far more common than they are here.

...do we know that they're extremely valuable though? The CMC bought that industrial dryer with one, but in the very same episode, Spike paid for fairly minor goods and services with much larger ones...and I can't think of any other case where the average gem was shown to have high value. Maybe that pet-dryer was just unusually cheap.
Then again, Equestria is sort of schizophrenic when it comes to the monetary value of things.

That's where the black market thing comes in. Inside Equestria, they're not worth much because they're so common. If you know a good smuggler, though, and they don't want to bother getting the gems themselves, they're worth a fair bit.

So which of the CMC knew how to fence that little ruby?
It was Sweetie Belle, wasn't it?

There might be a market, but I don't think there's one in Ponyville. Maybe Canterlot or Manehattan...somewhere that a pony could sneak anonymously into a shop to buy pornography and fried chicken.
...actually, that's not a bad idea. Get all of your breasts in one place.

So gems are extremely common, Equestria just creates an artificial scarcity to drive prices up?
