There's a cafe in town that hosts an experimental music night, I went last week and found Kyle Brockmann's Wrack, I was fucking delighted. I've been listening to the CD I bought there all week, which of course isn't on YouTube, nor is the recording of the long form piece they played based on the lyrics in Thomas Pynchon books (and added a trombone and trumpet to the group) as if they were jazz standards and then played 'modern' arrangements of those tunes.

I really enjoyed it. And this thread reminded me that I totally forgot to go again last Monday. Dammit.

Generally speaking, me either. And that used to be a blanket statement, but early fusion, which still had its foot deep in some of the better jazz traditions and less in the 'easy listening/adult contemporary' sound. Basically the whole style suffers by being associated with...ugh...Kenny G. But things like Headhunters, Bitches Brew, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Sun Ra Arkestra, Ornette Coleman's electric band, and Weather Report (with Wayne Shorter and Jaco Pastorious, fantastic players), they have enough traditional jazz elements in them with an experimental sound to them that I really found I like.

Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets, Dave Koz, etc...no thanks.
