What are you listening to: Classical only

I'm having a minor Shostakovich festival this afternoon, successively working my way through symphonies 5, 7, 8 & 10.

Why so many people prefer the 5th and the 7th over the 8th and the 10th escapes me.

Are you not a fan of Handel, or are you counting him as a German?

I enjoy a great many Handel compositions, but I count him as German while simultaneously acknowledging his important contribution to Georgian British musical culture. While he spent most of his life in Britain, he only moved there as an adult (when he was c.27), and the entirety of his formative musical training was in Germany and Italy.

Do make sure to catch the fifth on BBC 4 tomorrow evening - a couple of my friends and I queued all day but managed to get front row Proms Arena, and the performance was absolutely stunning.

I quite disagree. Sure, there's not much between Purcell and Elgar, but once there you get the delights of Elgar, Holst and Vaughan Williams all at once. Its hardly compositional poverty.

We're talking Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, Modern, Primitivist, and every other form of art music, which opera definitely falls under.

So would Dancing Mad and other classical-oriented video game music count?
