Civ4 vs. Civ5 Discussion

Postby Craigsgrad » Sat Jun 15, 2013 5:09 pm

EDIT: looks like I posted this in the wrong forum (ok it's been moved)
I'm sure a lot of people on here have played Civilization 4 or 5, and this does seem a bit late since Civ5 was released in 2010.

Which of these two installments in the Civ franchise is better and why.

I usually prefer Civ4 but I like Civ5's combat system better because of the realistic ranged attacks and experience system, I know Civ4 had this experience system but literally every battle gave experience, Civ5 now limits experience if the unit you fought was much weaker. The reason I prefer Civ4 is down to the fact that Civ5 lags when I play it.

Ah I didn't realize this, every forum is different, stuff like this would normally go in general discussions. Sorry about that.

I prefer Civ4 due to a couple of reasons
1. Civ5 lags
2. Civ5 is extremely unstable and crashes a lot on my other computer
3. Civ5 completely nerfed the diplomacy system
4. Allies in Civ5 are never allies and often stab you in the back with no consequences while if you defend yourself you have everyone calling you a "warmonger"
5. Civ5 isn't half as complex as Civ4
6. They made religion a DLC
7. Its so easy to win, just go for a cultural or time victory
8. Conquest victory is almost impossible due to the insanely high maintenance costs.
9. The only way to win is to play as the civ doing what is was meant to do. I can't win as India for a conquest victory for example.
10. Rhye's and fall, colonization, and final frontier is civ4 only.

I strongly agree about the religion being DLC, it didn't make sense that they got rid of it in the first place, also after playing a while I find Civ5's religion system to be annoying and it just doesn't make sense, founding a religion by gaining faith points is historically inaccurate.

On another note I'm glad to see someone who didn't criticize the fact that it's a steam game.

Civ5.

I'm highly Imperialist, and Civ4's godawful combat doesn't do much for me.

Civ4 does have better micromanagement, though.

Honestly, it's a tough call; I like the depth of Civ IV's religious system but I also like the additional balancing and improvements to underlying mechanics in Civ V. Overall, though, I'd back Civ IV for the greater complexity and options; while I do like the concept of city defense as portrayed in Civ V, it can sometimes border on the ridiculous when a sizable city completely undefended by professional forces is capable of resisting or severely damaging an attack by a number of troops with comparable technology levels (including pre-Artillery siege units).

I also dislike the lack of any real war weariness in Civ V; one of the key ways to wear down an enemy when on the defensive was to simply fight better than them and destroy units in your own territory and then seize a few territories.

As it stands, you can basically fight eternal wars without any consequences.

Civ IV, hands down, is the best of the two for me. While I like Civ V, I really have to treat it like its own game because it's completely different in comparison.

I think, of all the things that have bothered me about Civ V, it's the fact that I don't feel like I'm growing a country anymore. The way territory expands ends up making countries look like snaky swathes of territory rather than, well, countries. On top of that, while troop management is a lot better and more complex in Civ V, the fact that a city can completely destroy an army is a bit rediculous. Also, playing down the use of roads kinda pissed me off and the religion system is wacky.

Finally, the BIGGEST mistake they made, for me, is completely nerfing the statistics in the game. One thing I LOVED (and still love) about Civ IV is how I could open up menus and see all the statistics of my country and how they compare to other countries. Sure, that exists in Civ V, but nowhere near the complexity of the previous game. They also removed the part where, when you won or retired, it would show the entire history of the game you just played and you got to see the countries grow and be conquered.

Overall, Civ V was a HUGE disappointment for me in comparison to it's predecessor. They didn't do what they did with Civ IV when they just added on and changed the graphics of Civ III. Nope, they made an entirely new game with much less complexity in the areas of where it really mattered to me most (the whole concept of ruling a country). To me, it's really just geared to players who want to get out there and conquer, like Civ Rev for the consoles.
