But in all seriousness, to break the ice would you use привет, здравствой, или здравстойте? Or is there a completely different word/phrase for this type of occasion? it seems to me that привет would be the best greeting as it could imply that you are seeking familiarity with a person.

Russia's a very traditional country, so it would depend on the setting. If you're meeting someone at a hockey game where Russians aren't playing like soccer players, then Privet might work. If it's a more formal setting, such as a book club, or something similar, you would use "Zdravtstvuite". Zdravtstvui is used if you already know the person, but are meeting him/her in a formal place, like a theater, or if the person's significantly younger than you. BTW, you misspelled them:

здравствyй
здравствyйте

Thank you for the information and the correction of spelling :) I shall be more careful with my spelling in the future

Unfortunately, what I know (or think I know) about Russian culture is off Wikipedia's page on Russian superstitions and from Polandball... :palm:

I'd love to learn more... :)

I know for a fact that Muscovite and St. Petersburg culture has distinct differences from what we see here in Kazan.

There's this handy-dandy website, it's really brief, but it covers quite a bit: http://aboutkazan.com/kazan-russia-krem ... otos.shtml

Let me know if that helps! If you're a student who's studying how many different people of various ethnicities/religions/etc can get along after living together for millenia, Kazan and Derbent, (you'd have to go through Makhachkala, Dagestan,) are a must! Otherwise it's just amazing sights to see, that I highly recommend.

When I was a young, foolish kid, I used to think Russia is an all-white country. However, as I matured and as times go by, I'm surprised when I find out Russia is actually an multi-ethnic and multicultural country of its own.

I love it when people ask me if I'm Russian online. Because I have a basic knowledge of Russian history and culture, because I can explain Russia's actions in a rational, historical context rather than "OMG EBUL RUSKIS," because I don't subscribe to the delusion that Russians are some sort of semi-human bear people, because I find the hypocrisy of both sides in the Ukrainian conflict hilarious...I must be Russian, right?

I don't even speak Russian ._.

Well, you use the Russian naval flag topped by the Russian double headed eagle. Not to say that everyone is what their flags say they are, but that at least points to there, and it may make it somewhat more understandable.

to be fascinating mainly in The North Caucasuses and Kazan areas such as the Kuban and Don Cossacks in North Caucasia and Dagestan as another example of the diversity and Islamic Culture in Russia.

You know the majority of Russia is anti-islam, right? Seems like something you'd be against. Like the Islam books ban in Crimea.

We're not anti-Islam. It's just that most of the racism in Russia, due to historical territory, is directed towards ethnicities that happen to be primarily Muslims.

As an Americaphied(?) Russian, I can tell you its not that special. I've gone Odessa, which, although situated in Ukraine, is a city built for Russians, by Russians, and I can tell you its kind of...meh. Maybe, as someone who lives amongst Russians, the atmosphere doesn't have that foreign aura for me. I paid way more attention to the constantly present smell of gasoline and cigarette smoke than the 'ancient buildings'.
The problem with Russians is that we are honest with everything, even our bad habits. If we smoke, spit, swear, we don't hide it, nor do we make excuses for it.

Also, Russians are surprisingly quiet. Although we do have moments of loudness, these can only be shared with other 'willing noise makers'. In everyday life, facial and body language is much more important than words. We also treasure 'lakonichnost', the ability to say many things with a small amount of words.

This is pretty much me anyway. People can usually tell I'm Russian since I don't smile and don't get particularly friendly with people, strangers especially. I don't talk much to anybody really though. I'm just not that talkative.

I just started watching it and I will say this: the intro killed me. Made me chuckle a whole lot. Especially the perfectly squared identical buildings marching. I shall give you my impressions as soon as I finish watching it and, of course, I will ask you any questions I may have.

BTW, is there a better streaming link? The Youtube one works for a bit and then stops to buffer forever and I have to reload the page and then forward to the last scene I watched. It's getting annoying.

I got a Russian girlfriend for around two years now, Volga-Tatar/Bashkir to be exact, I even converted to Islam because of her. I've visited her two times in Bashkortostan, and I went to Kazan with her. She also teaches me Russian (her parents only speak Russian and Tatar), although my grammar is horrible.

Everytime I go to Russia I go with joy, it's a nice country, especially in the summer.

How doss motoring look like in Russia?
Capitalism, single-payer healthcare, pro-choice, LGBT rights, progressive personal taxation, low corporate tax, pro-business law, welfare for those in need.

Hello! I'd like to into Russian (specifically the language, but a large part of language is culture/how it's used). One question I have is: is it true that if you learn one Slavic language, you pretty much know them all? Or is that Amerikanski propaganda?

Due to the late divergence of the Slavic languages, there is still a relatively high degree of mutual intelligibility between them in comparison to other branches of Indo-European. Of course, this will decrease as you move from East Slavic to West Slavic to South Slavic, but there are still a great number of similarities between each branch. It'll be massively easier to learn another Slavic language (especially if it's in the same branch) when you already know one of them, as a great deal of grammar and vocabulary remains constant.
