Due to the late divergence of the Slavic languages, there is still a relatively high degree of mutual intelligibility between them in comparison to other branches of Indo-European. Of course, this will decrease as you move from East Slavic to West Slavic to South Slavic, but there are still a great number of similarities between each branch. It'll be massively easier to learn another Slavic language (especially if it's in the same branch) when you already know one of them, as a great deal of grammar and vocabulary remains constant.
Nice to know. I was thinking of taking up Russian as everybody and their brother east of Warsaw speaks it to some degree.
