Don't debate opera with me.
They wrote Pagliacci based on MY life.
Is there any particular reason you ignored the on-topic segment of my post and included absolutely zero on-topic material in your post after accusing me of threadjacking?
In ye olde days, when I had a Newtype USA subscription, I first heard of The Count of Monte Cristo. Haven't seen it yet, but it seems interesting enough to add to my list of anime to watch, especially with the scifi twist. What's your opinion on it? Yea, nay, may(be)? I haven't read the book it was (loosely) based on either, so aside from Newtype's rather unhelpful summary/synopsis, I know next to nothing, and TOW has a habit of being too detailed about things so I don't want to read the article there for fear of spoilers.
Also, what is your opinion of Makoto Shinkai and his films?
To expand on this, Makoto Shinkai I find to be an incredible artist. The fact that he did almost everything himself when making Voices of a Distant Star really impresses me, and speaks volumes of the dedication he must have. Not to mention the fact that it was one of my early favourites, and still is. Then there's The Place Promised In Our Early Days, which is a bit longer, more fleshed out, and a bit more refined. It's just as open-ended, but maintains roughly the same ratio of scifi to personal interaction and focus. Both movies are absolutely gorgeous and have sweeping, moving OSTs to boot (Tenmon is stellar).
And then there is 5 Centimeters per Second. It's a far cry from his previous movies, and is a three part OVA, but it's still good. I didn't particularly care for the rather abrupt change of tone toward the end, but... it still works, I think. It still contains the same level of emotion, it still has that stellar music and art throughout, and it is still, clearly, Shinkai at work. Unfortunately there is little to no scifi present in this one, but regardless, that doesn't ruin it.
All in all, three good movies/OVAs, and definite must-sees if you haven't watched them already. The music makes for a great addition to your personal library as well. I highly recommend them.
