Is there any particular reason you ignored the on-topic segment of my post and included absolutely zero on-topic material in your post after accusing me of threadjacking?

In ye olde days, when I had a Newtype USA subscription, I first heard of The Count of Monte Cristo. Haven't seen it yet, but it seems interesting enough to add to my list of anime to watch, especially with the scifi twist. What's your opinion on it? Yea, nay, may(be)? I haven't read the book it was (loosely) based on either, so aside from Newtype's rather unhelpful summary/synopsis, I know next to nothing, and TOW has a habit of being too detailed about things so I don't want to read the article there for fear of spoilers.

Also, what is your opinion of Makoto Shinkai and his films?

To expand on this, Makoto Shinkai I find to be an incredible artist. The fact that he did almost everything himself when making Voices of a Distant Star really impresses me, and speaks volumes of the dedication he must have. Not to mention the fact that it was one of my early favourites, and still is. Then there's The Place Promised In Our Early Days, which is a bit longer, more fleshed out, and a bit more refined. It's just as open-ended, but maintains roughly the same ratio of scifi to personal interaction and focus. Both movies are absolutely gorgeous and have sweeping, moving OSTs to boot (Tenmon is stellar).

And then there is 5 Centimeters per Second. It's a far cry from his previous movies, and is a three part OVA, but it's still good. I didn't particularly care for the rather abrupt change of tone toward the end, but... it still works, I think. It still contains the same level of emotion, it still has that stellar music and art throughout, and it is still, clearly, Shinkai at work. Unfortunately there is little to no scifi present in this one, but regardless, that doesn't ruin it.

All in all, three good movies/OVAs, and definite must-sees if you haven't watched them already. The music makes for a great addition to your personal library as well. I highly recommend them.

Not a series, but I just watched Tonari no Totoro. Renewed my love for Studio Ghibli.

I've seen people talk about anime movies here before.

The only question on whether Miyazaki counts as anime is whether such a label is too narrow, considering the way Ghibli's films touch the entire world. :ugeek:

I would consider Hayao Miyazaki's films anime. For what I know of the genre (if I may call it that, I'm tired and not really up to be ultra specific), they seem to fit it.

They're definitely anime, I just think they cross a whole bunch of cultural borders that make it something more than that.

I should probably start a thread about what exactly anime is. The question has always interested me.

But maybe tomorrow.

We had one of those a while back. I think JuNii authored it. Perhaps it would be a nice idea to have one again.

That's actually a pretty good question, i know that my definition of anime is different then some of my friends, so it might be an interesting debate

Actually, the last time I had that debate with someone, I found out people have a very narrow, probably racist view of anime.

But, maybe I should wait for an actual platform before I bitch. :?

I don't think that counts as an anime. Wasn't it made in the US?

Recently watched Serial Experiments Lain and re-watched Neon Genesis Evangelion
I decided to clear the palette with something a bit less serious, so I started watching Welcome to the NHK a few days ago.
Once that's finished, I think I'll get started watching Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and finish my refresher run-through of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

School Days.
A solid and realistic reminder to all anime fans everywhere never to attempt to start an anime-esque harem in real life.
Nice ending. >.>
-.- Also, fuuuuu-
Not the greatest anime I've ever seen, tbh. The characters are sooo....ugh.

Currently watching A Certain Scientific Railgun, expecting it to be another schoolgirl comedy/action genre.

Episode 11...LOLNOPE. It's like PMMM's episode 3 again. Although it does revert back to comedy again. Or at least I'm expecting it to.

School Days fucked me up pretty badly. Massive trigger toward the end hit me like a freight train. :(

Okay, it's not as bad as the visual novel.

Key word is 'trigger'. The asshole who recommended it to me conveniently neglected to mention the, ah... 'circumstances' concerning Kotonoha later in the series.
