Understandable. I don't know which one I prefer, they satisfy different wants.

Anime definitely is cool :p
So is manga

Am I the only one who learns a lot of basic Japanese words/phrases by watching animes??

No, like commonly used phrases. Hello, goodbye, that sort of thing.

If you really want a good grasp on the Japanese language, it will not be an easy path. You have to learn the kanji, the hirigana, and the katakana. After having a stable grasp on the Kanji, you can learn sentences. But just like any language, you must learn how to construct sentences on your own. So you would be spending tons of time memorizing sentence structure and verb patterns. Oh, here's the kicker, anime won't help you learn. Anime voice acting is performed in a way that is similar to English stage acting. It's very loud and boisterous. No one in Japan speaks like that. I guess learning through anime is okay, but it's not a recommended path. Watching too much will make you form bad habits. As for learning style, I've heard that RosettaStone works. I know there is a site that makes you translate sentences (and I've heard it works well) but the name escapes me. If you can, go for a real class. Having someone familiar with the language guiding you is always a great idea. Plus, teachers are always excited to see students asking more about their subject. It shows that you really do care about it and they will help you with anything related to that. One more thing, any time you get a chance to speak Japanese, take it. Speaking with a native speaker improves your own skills at a much faster rate. Immersion is also the key to learning a language. The more you use it, the better you get.

Wow, lots of text. Just know that Japanese isn't a good language for beginners to learn.

I do know and aware that Japanese language isn't one of the easiest ones. Especially Kanji. I need to learn 3000 of them. I do not mind Katakana and Hiragana though. It just interests me to learn.

It's actually 2,000 kanji to acquire an "adult" reading level. But yeah, I find languages that don't use the Latin alphabet to be very interesting. I picked up Korean in about 15 minutes and I'm working on Russian. Might as well add Japanese while I'm at it.

Wow. I'm planning to study Hiragana and Katakana this summer. Korean is slightly easy because they only have 1 writing system as oppose to Japan. From what I know, Kanji is also Chinese letters.

Korean actually has an alphabet. Each stroke(s) has an assigned syllable and follows a certain order. My only problem with Korean is knowing what exactly makes out a Han (character block).

And yes, Kanji is Chinese characters. I have no idea why the Japanese thought that characters are better than syllables. The Koreans have them beat on this one. But at the least they Koreans can't compete with their Manhwa!

Chinese heritage I guess. A large part of Japanese culture came from the Chinese so they inherited Kanji from the Chinese too. And true, Manhwa is no match for Manga :p

Hiragana and Katakana are fairly easy to learn. Just practice writing them and you'll get them in no time.

Taggy.

I have the house to myself for the next week as my mother is away on holiday. Instead of throwing a party, I am taking advantage of the situation to have a series of anime marathons.

nandesuka would be used like, "kore wa nandesuka?" The nan bit is the "what", effectively.
