I did notice the ethnic variety of names. I suppose the point is that by this point all of humanity has had to mix in the walled cities to such an extent that nationality before the Walls doesn't matter anymore, making it a more universal story about the oppressed/occupied? Eren at the beginning reminds me of Hamas or Chechnyan separatists- consumed with anger and a desire to fight those who he sees as responsible for putting his people in a box.
