Cast Reveal for Strange New Worlds

Including the return of Uhura, Nurse Chapel and Doctor M'Benga, along with new characters in undisclosed Ops roles - an Aenar by the name of Hemmer, Lt. Erica Ortegas who's apparently going to be the navigator despite being a red rather than goldshirt, and a certain La'an Noonien-Singh.

Cannot deny, the idea of a Borg Queen captured and, presumably, without a hive is an interesting one. She did NOT look good when she had some control over herself at 1:42.

Well, the totalitarian dictatorship thing and them going to the 21st century isn't much of a surprise, considering what has been leaking out previously. I wonder what real-world reasons are behind them choosing to do that, money-saving measures or otherwise.

I wonder if they'll retcon previously established history to try and reinforce Star Trek as being in our future...or maybe do something like include a nod to the development of the Sanctuary Districts. I really hope they don't try to include a pandemic in their early 2020s, that would be too on the nose and imply they're retconning previously established events yet again, like '90s Trek sorta did with '60s.

Also, what's with that 'three days until the future is changed irrecoverably'? They go back in time three days before whatever altered the timeline, and have only one chance at doing it? If only they had an extra Doc Brown Kruge bird of prey lying around.

The ending was spot on.

Because of the nature of my job, I attended quite a few of those stuffy admiralty parties despite being an enlisted marine. And yes, they were every bit the stuffy, pompous affair it was on the show. The beat part was always the end of the night, finding your way to some dive with your mates and closing it down in your dress uniforms.

Also calling it now:

Picard S2 isn't going to end with them restoring the timeline completely, but instead the writers are going to use it as an excuse to retcon some stuff.

Q goes insane story

Ronald D. Moore devised a story which had Q losing his mind. "I pitched a memo about a Q show," he recalled. "The universe suddenly fractured, and there were all these bizarre things happening." (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 42, p. 13) Moore elaborated, "It was a totally nutso beginning – Picard is suddenly walking down [a] New York street dressed in his uniform but carrying a brief-case and wearing a fedora. He passes Riker who is pounding on the side of a building with a loaf of bread – that's Riker's job, to pound the side of a building with a loaf of bread. And a Klingon driving a taxi cab drives by and a knight in shining armor is the cop, all this insane stuff." (Cinefantastique, Vol. 25/26, No. 6/1, p. 86) In fact, Moore imagined multiple armor-clad knights walking around on the New York street. (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 42, p. 13) "All our characters are there and they are doing things that make zero sense," he continued, "and then the camera pans by an alley and there lying by a trash can is Q who is dressed like a homeless guy and he is mumbling to himself 'I used to be a super-being' [....] It's all about us trying to figure out that none of this is the way things are supposed to be and that nutty guy who is saying he used to be a super-being is actually right." (Cinefantastique, Vol. 25/26, No. 6/1, p. 86)

Though it had its supporters among the creative staff, the story wasn't greenlit for production because the producers vetoed it. In retrospect, Ronald D. Moore described the plot as "The one great one that I think the whole writing staff loved, but could never quite talk them into doing [....] We were totally nuts, but we said 'Man, this would be so cool.'" (Cinefantastique, Vol. 25/26, No. 6/1, p. 86) Despite the story being rejected, it notably inspired Michael Piller. "Michael didn't really buy it," Moore clarified, "but he did pick up on it and say that we should bookend the series with a Q show." Hence, the story directly influenced the writing of TNG series finale "All Good Things...". (Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection, issue 42, pp. 13-14)

Started watching Lower Decks last week, think it is decently interesting as a spoof, although my lore-heavy side is a little irritated with it.

For this episode:
- Not surprised there was a 'crash on random planet' episode, Trek tends to do those at least once every season or two. Did like that malfunction in the replicator doing only one food, not sure if we've seen that before. Generally, the planet reminded me of the episode "Gravity" in Voyager, which I'm sure they drew inspiration from.

- Very thankful that they didn't do a repeat of that Mugato episode with Boimler, nice he got in a little victory for himself.

- I'm not a big liker of fantasy or odd sexual plots, so that aspect of it was a little grating, but not too bad. I was expecting the twist (and I suspect the writers expected for us to), but still thought it was good. A villain with her evil plan to specifically trick someone into getting boinked is a new one, unsurprisingly very similar to Troi's mother (and certainly inspired by her) but slightly different...

- Star Trek reconfirms itself as being the Combverse, with him doing a fairly good job as the evil computer.

- Interesting that Starfleet is fine with storing dozens of evil computers directly in the Daystrom Institute on Earth, especially one as evil as CBS.

Adjusting for Lower Decks, I'd probably give it a 9/10, knocking off a point since there was the aforementioned minor annoyance with the fantasy plot.

As a whole, I am currently liking the second season more than the first. Haven't watched PIC or DIS yet, but will probably get around to them when I have more free time. The former is currently only ten episodes, so will probably do that one first. Interesting how I'm going through NuTrek backwards in terms of series, though.
