ironic as, of all of Kurtzman's titles, LD is the closest thing to old school trek. even if it's all jokes.

One plus of it compared to other NuTrek is how it maintains visual continuity better than the others from what I've seen.

Maybe not, but it was an episodic series with contained character driven plots, and not a glorified depository of cgi and lens flares.

it's actually sad that LD has more fleshed out, memorable characters than Picard and Disco combined

Yes, I find D'vana Tendi, Beckett Mariner, and Shax to be quite memorable. Also it is a little unfair to criticize the low number of characters and their opportunity to develop those characters in a show that so far has only 10, 20-25 minute episodes.

Lower Decks is a fun, relaxing show, set in the Star Trek universe, and steeped in Star Trek lore. It still has its fair amount of philosophy and social commentary, but it uses a different forum to deliver that philosophy and social commentary, it uses satire and other literary devices that take advantage of humor and/or lightheartedness, instead of dramatization. The amount of care Lower Decks takes in acknowledging, deconstructing, and rebuilding Star Treks tropes and lore (a process that is always done respectfully in Lower Decks and not in a way that demeans Star Trek), shows the amount of love for Star Trek that the writers have.

I consider Lower Decks to be my current favorite Star Trek series (and I appreciate it taking advantage of the medium of animation, one of my favorite mediums for story telling). I would not call it a good series for beginners to the Star Trek franchise, as I believe its core audience in mind is existing fans of Star Trek, who want to see the Star Trek world and lore expanded in subtle ways (that is why it is set after the events of DS9, Voyager, and The Next Generation), and don't mind "nuTrek's" attempts at doing so (I think the main issue with nuTrek is that it often, but not always, has lost it roots at providing philosophy and social commentary in its story in favor of excessive dramatization and special effects, something that Lower Decks avoids through going in the other direction altogether).

You are right there is nothing unfair about criticizing a show, but it is unfair to say a show has too few memorable characters, when the show has not had enough time to establish its characters. I am providing a counter-criticism to your criticism (debate).
