Well ST series do have a history of taking to or three seasons to find their feet. Could be STD is no different.

I quite like the show so far, the first season was a bit ropey, but i still enjoyed it, and i think season 2 was a good improvement that was doing some interesting stuff. Im excited to see what season 3 is gona do.

There was a notable upswing in quality where michelle paradise joined the writing staff half way through the season. Now that she's a co-runner with kurtzman for season three I expect it'll get even better.

Finally got my lazy ass around to the first episode of Picard. I like it.
Especially finding out B4 is dead. Quite a fun thing to see.

Also, it was super weird seeing Picard actually speak French.

Look's like Picard is going to be a slow burn, though theres some interesting developments in the world like:

why the fuck is there a romulan holding the rank of commodore and holding a senior position in Starfleet security?

She had a Vulcan emblem on her desk, so I'm assuming she's either a Vulcan working with Section 31 in league with that Tal'Shiar subgroup, or she's a Romulan impersonating a Vulcan (like that Romulan impersonating a Human Lieutenant)

Yes the IDIC strikes me that she's Vulcan or at least Romulan masquerading as Vulcan. I think the later, as she was far more deadpan when speaking with the Admiral than her subordinate.
Such heroic nonsense!

Good episode, very interesting stuff, its definitely got me hooked.

Laughed my ass off when that Admiral said "Sheer fucking hubris" when Picard asked for a ship, and the Romulan infiltration seems to be pretty entrenched on earth, im wondering what their long term plan is. They definitely seem to be keen on getting their hands on the Androids creator and any others that might be lurking around, also calling them "Abominations" so i wonder is it purely to kill Maddox or something else?

Also i like Laris, she is a good character, feels like a very typical irish mom (actress helps a lot lol), but in space with space ears.

I liked Admiral Clancy's response to Picard's request.

To paraphrase a response in the Daystrom Institute subreddit, it's like Colin Powell slamming the US military on its activities on the Middle East then asking for a command.

After watching all good things, I have a theory that the Q are human. Based on Q and Picard's last conversation, I get the impression that The Q are humanity's evolutionary zenith. Somewhere in the next billion or so years Humans evolve into the Q

New haven america wrote:It's ok, but when you take a harder look at it a lot of things don't make sense.

Like, why is The Federation racist towards Romulans, even though they allied with The Federation during the Dominion War and helped with Shinzon's bullshit in Nemesis? Hell, the Romulans simply asking fan outside power for help is a pretty massive act of friendship from them, considering how xenophobic, prideful, and stubborn they are. Wouldn't this racism make more sense if it was for the Cardassians or Breen, who actively sided with The Dominion and helped them invade the Alpha Quadrant? Why are the Klingons not picking off the scraps of The RSE considering they still hate each other even after being allies of convenience? Why did the romulans not know their star was gonna go nova despite being right next to it? Why did the Romulan assassins not just stun I don't Remember her Name chick instead of trying to suffocate her? Etc...

1. Because Romulans have had a long history of untrustworthyness and there was a massive loss of life and resources in attempting to construct an evacuation fleet for them. The racism is a product and response of generational excuses to pretend their hands are clean in inaction to help the people as they shift more isolationist in response to the massive loss of life and resources in the attack on Mars. 2. I frankly do not doubt it will come out that rogue elements of Starfleet/Federation or maybe even Section 31 was behind the attack on Mars to stop the rescue of Romulans. It would not be the first time that members of Starfleet or the Federation did something like that to attain some goal. And many times those groups had only managed to succeed it stopping the rogue element by the skin of their teeth and bucking order.

You like to pretend the Federation is a painting of utopia. It has never been that. It has been a representation of striving to some unity. But it has countless time and time again demonstrated a lack of ability to honestly live up to its own ideals.

3. In TOS women could not command starships... that was later retconned out, but that is how it was. The federation has on multiple occasions shown a willingness to forcibly relocate residents of planets under the guise of peace or betterment of federation citizens.... It has easily fallen in line to deceit and manipulation only to get saved the last minute by a handfull of officers who decided to buck orders (this last is tenuous, suppose those handfull of officers had not been at the right place at the right time?). It is by no means actually ever been an lasting utopia. The Federation was a principaled utopia for a few years during TNG...... a golden age. But that was it. Outside of that there was no issue with the government, starfleet of federation citizens demonstrating prejudices and having the same manipulated by certain actors. This has time and time again been the canvas for many a morality play in the series even back to TOS.

I hate to break it to you, but the idea of the federation you have never existed. Not even in Star Trek's own lore.

1. And they've been opening up and have been making an effort to work with The Federation. Again, them simply asking an outside power for help is a massive positive development in diplomatic relations.

Also, by showing everyone as racist towards the Romulans, you miss out on a lot of chances to write subtle stories (Something Kurtzman and Goldsman are incapable of). Like, a colony near the Neutral Zone refusing to take Romulan refugees because some of the leader's innocent family members or friends were killed by them, but then it's revealed that the colonists themselves also killed or tortured innocent Romulans, which then can dive into an interesting story about racism, how to cope with emotional scars, can people move on from the past, should colonies be given the power to choose who they let in or not and does being a refugee bypass those local law? Etc...
2. It probably did happened because of Section 31 because Alex Kurtzman really likes Section 31.
3. You don't fucking know what I think The Federation is, so stop projecting what you think I believe, k?

The Federation was never portrayed as a Utopia, areas of it were (Like Earth and the other Core Member Planets, for example). It's been portrayed as a Semi-Utopia, and has always been optimistic, but The Federation and Galaxy as a whole has never been portrayed as a full on Utopia. Just look at the DMZ, Neutral Zone, Ferenagi Alliance, The RSE, Cardassians, etc...

Earth was a Utopia in most of TNG Era Trek, but Earth isn't The Federation as a whole, is it?

well Spy stories are a big part of Star Trek, like "Conspiracy," The "Redemption" two parter, or "The Face of The Enemy" in TNG; "In the Pale Moon Light" in DS9.
"Scorpion", "In the Flesh" and "Unimatrix Zero" in Voyager, then there was all the temporal cold war stuff in Enterprise."

This episode was great, really enjoyed it. Really sad the state of the Romulans now, like they were a bunch of dicks like 90% of the time but cant help but feel a bit bad for them.

Highlight was El Noor completely facking eviscerating those romulans, god damn boy got some moves.

The brief space engagement wasnt too bad either, i liked the classic bird of prey's design.
