I quite like the show so far, the first season was a bit ropey, but i still enjoyed it, and i think season 2 was a good improvement that was doing some interesting stuff. Im excited to see what season 3 is gona do.

To paraphrase a response in the Daystrom Institute subreddit, it's like Colin Powell slamming the US military on its activities on the Middle East then asking for a command.

Like, why is The Federation racist towards Romulans, even though they allied with The Federation during the Dominion War and helped with Shinzon's bullshit in Nemesis? Hell, the Romulans simply asking fan outside power for help is a pretty massive act of friendship from them, considering how xenophobic, prideful, and stubborn they are. Wouldn't this racism make more sense if it was for the Cardassians or Breen, who actively sided with The Dominion and helped them invade the Alpha Quadrant? Why are the Klingons not picking off the scraps of The RSE considering they still hate each other even after being allies of convenience? Why did the romulans not know their star was gonna go nova despite being right next to it? Why did the Romulan assassins not just stun I don't Remember her Name chick instead of trying to suffocate her? Etc...
1. Because Romulans have had a long history of untrustworthyness and there was a massive loss of life and resources in attempting to construct an evacuation fleet for them. The racism is a product and response of generational excuses to pretend their hands are clean in inaction to help the people as they shift more isolationist in response to the massive loss of life and resources in the attack on Mars. 2. I frankly do not doubt it will come out that rogue elements of Starfleet/Federation or maybe even Section 31 was behind the attack on Mars to stop the rescue of Romulans. It would not be the first time that members of Starfleet or the Federation did something like that to attain some goal. And many times those groups had only managed to succeed it stopping the rogue element by the skin of their teeth and bucking order.
You like to pretend the Federation is a painting of utopia. It has never been that. It has been a representation of striving to some unity. But it has countless time and time again demonstrated a lack of ability to honestly live up to its own ideals.
3. In TOS women could not command starships... that was later retconned out, but that is how it was. The federation has on multiple occasions shown a willingness to forcibly relocate residents of planets under the guise of peace or betterment of federation citizens.... It has easily fallen in line to deceit and manipulation only to get saved the last minute by a handfull of officers who decided to buck orders (this last is tenuous, suppose those handfull of officers had not been at the right place at the right time?). It is by no means actually ever been an lasting utopia. The Federation was a principaled utopia for a few years during TNG...... a golden age. But that was it. Outside of that there was no issue with the government, starfleet of federation citizens demonstrating prejudices and having the same manipulated by certain actors. This has time and time again been the canvas for many a morality play in the series even back to TOS.
I hate to break it to you, but the idea of the federation you have never existed. Not even in Star Trek's own lore.
