How, exactly, does the size of one's viewing umbrella determine how casual a sci-fi fan they are? For instance, what if someone refuses to watch anything but Star Trek, but also just so happens to attend Trekkie conventions several times a year in full cosplay garb? What if that same person has watched every single minute of on-air Trek, owns all publicly available bonus content, and runs a website based on Trek? What if they've memorized the entire scripts of several of their favorite episodes?

I'd hardly say that person is a casual fan of the genre, but based on your definition, they would be considered one.

*looms ominously*

Enough talk about what constitutes "casual" sci-fi vs "true" fandom. Keep discussion on topic.

So, to move us back on topic... Chakotay and Sisko get in a fistfight in Ten Forward. Who wins?

Sisko.

Chakotay may have been trained as a boxer, but I think Sisko has more physical strength and is way more of a badass. He punched Q in the face and lived to tell about it.

I'd say Sisko, too. As much as I love Chakotay, his fighting style is based on using hit-and run guerrilla tactics, and is more useful when you're holding a disruptor rifle and creeping through the wilderness or piloting an attack ship through a debris field than when you have nothing but your body and your immediate surroundings to fight with. Sisko, on the other hand, sticks it out because of his very nature. Besides, he's also basically a trained soldier, since Starfleet stopped being an expeditionary organization and started being a military after season three of DS9.

Sisko punched Q and took on a lot of Klingon's and Jem'hadar in close combat.
Chakotay ummm, got into a hallucinogenic boxing match?
I'll go with Sisko.

Sisko wins. He is more bad-ass and Chuckles' trainer is a gardener.

Sisko shows off the home he is building on Bajor. During the trash talk "You're not worthy of that uniform." they make the bet that the prize is Sisko's house. Chuckles goes on his "a man does not own Land" and would take a dive it he ever had a chance.

No, because that would mean they'd be getting less money.

This is the funniest sentence I've read in a while.
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

Kek, I just Googled "distance from Wolf 359 to the Sun" and I got a typical box with an answer at the top of the page. I was quite happy to see that the picture on the side of said box was a screenshot from the Battle of Worf 359 instead of some picture of the actual star. Good job, Wikipedia!

It looks like Klingons are going to heavily featured on Discovery. *Potential spoilers in the link.*

At least the plot and the casting news has been pretty decent from what we've heard so far.

So why does this have to be on All Access and not Netflix? That still bugs the crap out of me.

Watching "Force of Nature" (That one TNG episode with the Warp Speed is bad story).

Funny thing, the usual writers of ST hate this episode, mainly because (As shown multiple times before and after) there are numerous species that attained Warp capabilities before the Federation even existed, and since Warp Speed apparently breaks space, that means that the Milky Way would've already been torn apart by 2300.

I also hate that part.

Though... how were the writers able to take such a massive leap in logic? As of TNG and early DS9, the list of species that became Warp capable before Humans was already pretty long (Progenitors, Klingons, Vulcans/Romulans, The Borg, Bajorans, Cardassians, Andorians, The T'kon, etc...), so wouldn't they have already caused large damage to the galaxy?

I've been giving it some thought as of late...

What movies are actually Trek (Trek as we know it from TV)?

I've come to the conclusion that TMP, IV, VI* are. The rest are not.

*Kinda, depends on if it's the theatrical or the original VHS release.

Now I'm not saying the rest are necessarily BAD movies, but... the more I think about, the more I think the movies, being movies, missed Trek.

That wasn't the problem. Normally, space traffic is dispersed considerably, and not really a big deal. However in this case the federation had directed all travel through a narrow corridor of space, and that confinement of warp travel to one local sized area was causing some serious damage. Kind of the difference between a sneaker and a stilletto: step on someone's foot with a sneaker and won't do much at all because weight is dispersed over the surface area. Step on someone afoot with a stiletto, and a 90 lb girl can effortlessly break someone's foot.

The hell are you on about? Them being good has nothing to do with them being "Trek." They're all canonical Star Trek movies whether we like them or not.
