This weeks "The Orville"

Damn, it gets better and better. Looks fucking fantastic, the opposite of strange new pseudotrek. The Krill are shaping up well as a good opponent with facettes, like the proper play on the klingons they are. And there's little things, like the non-existence of transporters in the Orville-verse. This really is the new trek for me, and I grew up watching TNG. Kirk - Picard - Sisko - Mercer. Love the music, the landing sequence on the Krill homeworld was grandiose. Damn, the theme and intro are spot on. They even had a holo-joke in the beginning, what a lovely reference. Not a shitty persiflage bastardisation like "new spock" but a proper respectful hommage. I love that fanfare, this really feels like exciting times in optimistically exploring the universe, even with the Borg-expy as big bad. Somehow SNW looks dark all the time, depressingly so. In contrast the Orville is bright and so is its universe. This one really feels like we have the future at out hands here, an optimists vision for a better world, just like the Enterprise-D was back then. And they do it without replicators and transporters to boot.

tl;dr: it is in fact not shit, unlike strange new worlds.

For all Mankind was not bad either.

Despite all the blatant pandering to the usual crowd, the diverse histrionics of all those characters I don't give a shit about and the superfluous personal dramatics, a Soviet Mars Launch in 1994? Da, towarish, you make comrad Stalin proud. Spacecraft looks like proper soviet machine too! If you manage to ignore all the interpersonal bullshit they keep shoving into your face, this is proper hard-scifi. You can easily skip most of it without missing anything important, after a while you hardly remember their names. It's the usual deal... and much worse than the last two seasons. The only white male character I remember so far was the evil KGB man, everybody else is busy being all diverse, fabulous and so on. Hell, even Milton left the NASA for the private sector in this one.

Forget that crap, THIS is what this is about:

Image

That's right, the soviets go to mars in a mini-deathstar. :D

Right, this is a Seth MacFarlane show. So of course he
torpedoes the Krill alliance plotline to make some hamfisted allegory about the election.

This week's SNW was alright if weird.

That ending was more than a little questionable though, the nebula entity taking the kid makes the Traveler look tame.

Not everything is about the orange man. :D

Vampire-aliens that live on Planet Minas Morgul and now are lead by female reptile space hitler, that this actually works to even the little degree it does is a good testament. Farlane brought us Beavis and Butthead, we should give him a few freebies for that at least.

New SNW ep was fun! Seeing everyone play against type was amusing and the actors were having a blast.

Not sure how I feel about the weird wrapup of the Doctor's plot, and I'm wondering if we'll actually see any worlds which are both new and strange before the end of the season tho.

Seriously:

EP1: Contains new world, world is not strange, world is like ours. Point of the episode.
EP2: Contains no worlds, but new comet, comet is strange. Points for effort.
EP3: Contains strange world, world is Federation colony and thus not new.
EP4: Contains world, world is Federation colony and neither new nor strange.
EP5: Contains no worlds at all.
EP6: Contains strange world, but not new, Federation has had previous contact.
EP7: Contains no worlds.
EP8: Contains no worlds.

As someone else noted its the Traveler wrap up. Writers realized character didn't work, and had go find a way to eliminate them without killing them. Convoluted but eh, it's season 1. It's to be expected. everything else was pretty fab.

Wait, I just realized... McFarlane is the guy behind family guy? The worst animated TV-show ever made, the ultimate repository of stupid jokes? his other movies are just as retarded, what's wrong with this clown?

Mashallah, looks like he turned about a new leaf. This new stuff is actually good! :eyebrow:

Imagine using decent actors for one-episode-characters just like the original did...

More power to him. He's got a steady paycheck from a basically uncanellable show, so he's free to do whatever he wants. Like The Orville.

Actually, it was Mike Judge that brought us Beavis and Butt-Head. Seth MacFarlane had nothing to do with it. And while I have outgrown South Park, apparently I did not outgrow Beavis and Butt-Head. The new movie had me gasping for air!

Yeah, I suppose I won't miss Klyden, but I'm sure he'll be back eventually. Maybe Topa will try to reconnect with her dad someday, or Klyden will one day try to patch things up with Bortis. It was a very good episode, much to my surprise.

So... "for all mankind" S03E04

Yeah, the theme goes on. Soviet-bashing is apparently de rigeur at crapple... first the Buran-thing last season: is TTLs Buran not running on top of the Energia? Is it using a copy of the US solid boosters instead? And after all the real Buran was significantly superior in capability to the US shuttles... this time it goes on. The USSR needs supposedly to copy US NERVA engines, despite the USSR already having their own RD-0410 nuclear-thermal engine.

Which was tested and working in 1985, so there's that... but fuck them commies, right?
Let me guess... the americans manage to transfer the fuel from the stricken soviet ship, and the corporate dickweasel makes it to mars first.

Still... there's this:
