Is that adjusted for inflation? If not, how much would you estimate they would cost now?

Another thing I see that's different too is you get a lot more content for your $60, in the since that programming the game is more complex, if you buy the right game, creativity. Great storytelling, whatever. Pacman is just like an arcade game...

Of course, there were some games with a ton of content back in the day, but to me the type of content all depends. A 15 hour story like The Last of Us (it is estimated at about 16 hours) is different then, say, Beyond: Two Souls 10 hour story. The Last of Us is 15 hours with brutal gameplay thrown in, and long times of just walking through locations and whatnot. It is a very story-driven game, though. And you got Beyond: Two Souls that is pretty much like playing a 10-hour interactive movie, so you pretty much got things going at you constantly there. And something open-world like Red Dead Redemption, or Skyrim with loads of other possibilities to throw out countless hours is also different then a completely story-driven game.

Of course, Red Dead Redemption's story was rather awesome, it being a story-driven game or not.

That's unadjusted. Yeah, prices now are fucking cheap (unless you're Australian).

Nonsense, you get a 6 hour long game with 4 hours of cutscenes and the replay value of self circumcision.

A plot can be burned into your memory, the challenges and enjoyment of a game's mechanics can be different every time.

"story drive games" are for the most part symptomatic of deteriorating tastes and industry quality.

I have never played a 6 hour long game with 4 hours of cut scenes. So don't try and prove a point to me then throw out a length of a game I've never even heard of before, with the exception of some $15 games. Also, generalizing the entire gaming industry as having 6 hour games with 4 hours of cut scenes is silly, as well.

Beyond: Two Souls is 10 hours and is like an interactive movie, so that probably has about that many cut scenes.

Story driven games are some of the best games I've ever played, as long they are done right. They can also be way too short, like you mentioned, but a lot can be fairly long (The Last of Us is supposed to be 16 hours).

But I know discussing this with you is worthless. I think the video game industry is getting slowly better. It still has problems. It still has a lot of problems. But I think in a lot of ways the game industry is improving as a whole.

everything you've said amounts to "I'm a casual gamer the industry is catering to me yayyyyy"

dishonoured is 7 hours at a god damn push bucko and lord knows you got on that hype train for quite a while.

could probably blast through the main part of skyrim's content in less than 6 actually.

last three battle field games under 10 hours.

call of duty goes without saying.

god of war.

new devil may cry shitfest, under 8 hours.

i beat spec ops in one sitting (probably highlighted just how bad games are getting)

assassin's creed games are all abysmally short but still feel overlong because the gameplay is ass.

uncharted games have all been pathetically short.

thing is that length isn't even the most important thing, it's quality. and none of these franchises have any (anymore at least). shallow boring and bland.

story driven games arent even inherently band, MGS is hugely story driven but its gameplay is still fucking excellent.

The issue is that the industry has become too big a business.

Companies don't want you spending tens of hours on a single game,

They just want to beat the game as fast as possible, and buy a new one.

That's not entirely true. For example, Tales of the Abyss has a ludicrous amount of side quests the game doesn't even tell you about, and a replay mode where you can adjust various settings depending on how well you did in your last run-through.

Well, in most of the world, yes, but in Japan the Tales series is actually pretty close to Final Fantasy in terms of popularity. But I see what you mean with games like COD.

Well, clearly you don't know me well. I think, like you, most games aren't worth the $60. There's a reason why I don't pay $60 for the majority of games. Including Dishonored, Far Cry 3, Assassins Creed 3, all of which we own. We didn't get any of them for $60. I'm very picky about what I spend a lot of money on, because I think a lot of games aren't worth the price at all.

Also, if you played through Dishonored in 6 hours, you are playing the game wrong in my opinion. That game took me 10 to 15 hours on both of my play through's. If you are plowing through it in 6 hours, then you are playing through it way too fast.

I seriously doubt you can blast through Skyrim's main content in less then 6 hours.

The rest I really don't know, except Assassins Creed 2 which is the only Assassins Creed I've played entirely through, and the Uncharted games which I thought were fine length. But again, I never bought any of those for $60. I didn't even play the first one. How much I pay on a game very much varies on how much I think it is worthwhile. The Uncharted games are worth $20 to $40 for me, but not technically $60.

Any time I feel picky with my gaming choices, there is always someone who manages to make me not feel so picky.

So we always seem to be pointing out companies that do bad (EA), but what about good? What's your favorite company/studio, mine has to be either rockstar or Bethesda.

Actually, look at how much streamlined Skyrim has become in comparison to previous Elder Scrolls games.

I cannot speak for Gears of War and Ratchet and Clank.

Wat? I've poured hours into it, if you barebones storyline sure, but even then it's a solid 20-30 hours, and I generally look around more for all these cool dungeons.

I don't really have favorites, completely. Probably Naughty Dog, Quantic Dreams, Thatgamecompany, and such for PS3 exclusives. As a whole, I don't really know.

Yeah, I kinda had a problem with that. You could at least make it challenging to get back, or something.

My other problem is that Skyrim points you DIRECTLY to everything you need. It is like "Find this object", but points directly to it. You can turn that off I think, though. I thought the game was worth the $60 I paid, but that doesn't mean I think it was problem-free.
